Rear axle identification

First off hello and thanks for the help in advance. I'm looking at a mid 70s F-600 that has bud wheels and a two speed rear axle. Can anyone by chance tell me what the rear end is and possibly the axle ratio possiblities? Is there a place on the axle itself that will have numbers stamped identifying it?

It should be an Eaton but there are more than one in F-600s so more info is needed
IH does use eaton rears also

There is a good bit of info here http://www.roadranger.com/Roadranger...=1162919212498

You can download a service manual also

What is the easiest way to identify the rear end itself? The body is pretty well gone on the truck and I'm trying to get it for parts.

There should be axle codeson the housing on right axle tube
Check second and third artical on the site I posted
If you still have plates with axle codes Numberdummy can identify it

The rear axle code is on the vehicle's data plate. That will give you the ratio. If it's an Eaton, which a two speed likely is, the ratio will also be stamped on the top of the carrier housing on a flat spot spot just above the pinion shaft.
This chart is from the 60's but should help.

I had a Eaton 2sp out of a 79 f600 that had a 6.33-8.81 ratio....

If there is no data plate on the housing you can drop the drive shaft and clean the end of the pinion shaft to read the numbers. call a gear shop with the numbers off the pinion, they should be able to give you the ratio"s....

Or you could jack up the rear end block one wheel so it can't turn. Turn the other wheel 1 revolution and count the revolutions of the pinion, now block the wheel your just turned and turn the other wheel 1 revolution and continue counting the revolution of the pinion.... if the pinion turns 6 1/4 to 6 1/2 times total after the turning of both wheels one revolution you could safely assume to have a 6.33 ratio... hope this is not to confusing.

Well your rear axle code is AF, so someone with the right manual could decode it for you.

F60CCFO2008=F600, (c)330MD, (c)ontario plant, if the serial # is Fzero2008, that would be 1969.

132 F602 4 81 AF3 = 132" wheelbase, F600 optional GVW, 4 (color?), conventional cab(81), AF= rear axle, 3= front axle

20000 164 3800 281643 = 20,000lb. GVW, 164 horsepower @3800 rpm,
district special order code 281643

Just had a thought there should have been a transmission code in there somewhere between the 81 and the AF3. Maybe A is the trans and F3 is the rear axle. Sometimes the front axle isn't listed unless it's an optional one.

F600CCF02008 / 132 / F602 / 4 81 / AF3 Should be / A / F3 // 20000 / 164 / 3800 / 281643.
F60 = F600 2WD (gas).

0 (or O) = No such engine code. The VIN has 11 digits (1961/80), not 12.

So it could be F60CCF02008 / C = 330 2V Medium Duty FT engine.

Or F60DCF02008 / D = 361 2V FT engine.

C = Oakville Ontario Canada Assembly Plant / I have my doubts that C is correct. It should be a U, because...

The truck was ordered from Louisville KY (DSO 28), so it makes sense the truck was assembled at the: Louisville KY Truck Assembly Plant (F60C[D]UF02008).

F02008 = 1969.

132" Wheelbase.

No COLOR code listed.

F602 = F600 (gas), 20,000 lbs. GVWR

4 81: 4 = Charcoal Black Corinthian Vinyl & Charcoal Black Woven Thong Repeat Vinyl // 81 = 81A Standard Cab.

AF3: In-correct = You typed the TRANS & AXLE codes together.

TRANS code A = New Process 435 4 Speed Manual Transmission.

AXLE code F3 = Eaton Model 15201 2 Speed Rear Axle / 6.33/8.81-1 / 15,000 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

20,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

164 net HP @ 3800 RPM

281643:

28 = Louisville KY Ford District Sales Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

1643 = Domestic Special Order Number. Your truck was ordered special by the original purchaser, not " bought off the lot."

Since there is no COLOR code, the truck was painted in a non standard color.

When this occurs, there is no COLOR code listed on the Warranty Plate and the truck (or car) has a 6 digit DSO denoting a special order.

100% correct.

Thru 1969, if the AXLE code is only two digits, the front axle (like this truck) has the standard axle.

Beginning in 1970, all 500 and larger trucks have a three digit axle code...regardless of whether the front axle is standard equipment or optional.

btw: Since 11/2006, I've decoded well over 700 VIN's and Warranty Plates for FTE members by using the apropos Ford truck & car parts catalogs.

Thank you very much. There is a bunch of paint on it and I was fighting the bees trying to get the numbers.
