Replacing rear axle bearings is quickly becoming a bad dream.

Are the left and right side axles interchangeable on a rear end with code

74 9C13?

I am having a difficult time getting the proper bearing and retainer, so trying to eliminate possibilities I swapped the right axle into the left side, and when I tighten the flange bolts it puts the bearing in a bind.

The bearings I used on the repair attempt was an 88128, with a small retainer, when I tighten up the flange nuts, it puts the bearing in a bind as well, and the axle will not turn.
I put the new bearing on an axle out of a '65 rear end assy, both axles appear identical.

The problem started when the axle slid out about a foot while I was driving.

Sounds like possibly either the axle seal isn't fully seated into the bore of the axle housing tube or, the axle bearing/retaining ring aren't fully seated on the axle.

The retainer is good, I'll beat on the seal and see if it gives. I did not replace the seal though. I have a new seal but I do not have the seal puller.

I had a 76 bronco and i replaced everything on the rear. I needed the standard sized bearing and were sent the larger sized axles. It acted the same way. I didnt have a shop manual, but it turned out i was mixing small-flange axles with standard axle tubes. Take a breather, double check everything, you dont want to keep stressing out those bearings, they are expensive. You can rent a seal puller and installer free at oreilly auto parts. I dont know how long youve owned the truck, but they can have slightly longer axles, off by just 1/4" to 3/8"!!!! Its hard to know what the po did until we fix their errors. Good luck.

I got the seal out with a pry bar, I was hesitant to try because I did not want to render the truck undriveable due to a torn up seal I could not get out. Well, the truck is undriveable without an axle so I figured, what did I have to lose.

When it quits raining I am going to put a pile of grease everywhere there is a possibility of interference and see if I can determine what is bottoming out.

This is for sure a frankentruck. The 9" carrier is supposed to have 31 splined axles
but has 28, like the '65 donor axle.

I pulled out the axle from the rt side of the truck and it does not fit either.

Thanks for the support.
