How do insure your dent?

I will picking up my "new to me" 79 on Friday and I am trying to figure out the best method of insurance. Since I will have a substantial investment in this truck I dont want to just insure it for the "blue book" value as I would lose money should it be totaled in a crash. Other insurance companies that deal with collector vehicles seem to impose a lot of restrictions. I want to be able to drive this truck when I want and not just on weekends or to a show.

Those of you who drive your trucks frequently....how do you insure it?

Have you thought about Antique/classic insurance. I use Haggerty and love them. There are others also but may be a good deal

I also went with Haggerty on an agreed value policy, aside from keeping it in a garage and having another primary use vehicle, no other restrictions.

I had a professional auto appraiser come out to my place and the guy gave me an appraisal value of what my truck is worth. He took photos of it and did a complete write-up on everything. Then I called the insurance company and had it covered at that value. It came out higher than the blue book value. It's a good piece of mind knowing the insurance company won't low-ball you if something happens to it.

I just got off the phone with a Hagerty rep and he basically told me I could drive it once a week, never to work, and never as a back up vehicle should my daily use car break down. Never haul anything in the bed or tow anything. Seems way too restrictive. I would hate for something to happen and then the ins. co. say "well you shouldnt have been driving it on that day" or "you were to far from home....."

I don't want to hear someone tell me I can't drive my truck more than once a week, or the amount of miles I can drive, or that I can't haul anything...not even something light in the bed. I agree it seems too restrictive.

That's why I've been keeping my receipts throughout my build on Buford. I've already spoken to my insurance carrier, and they said they could do an agreed value policy. The restrictions placed by other companies are ludicrous...they're intended to screw the policy holder because they KNOW that the policy holder will want to drive their vehicles, hence, potential loopholes for them to deny coverage. Luckily, my local carrier is a motorhead, and has a few toys of his own.

Granted, I have no plans of making Buford my daily driver, and besides my work vehicle, I still have my Cadillac and Maynard, so there's no fear of Buford becoming my last resort. Still, if I want to drive my truck, I don't want my policy saying I can't. What's the point of building it if you can't drive it?

As for blue book value...I gave up on that a long time ago. I think book value on these things hovers around $1500, and I've got about that much just into nuts, bolts and screws! (stainless and Grade 8 ain't cheap) So, anyway, you might want to talk to your normal carrier, and see if they can put together an agreed value policy for your truck. You'll have the piece of mind of coverage, and they know that they'd only have to cover what it's actually worth, instead of some sort of vague guess which would most likely screw the owner.

Just my $0.02

I've put a good amount of money in my dent and I like to drive it whenever I want to get my money's worth. Not fond of having it sit around in my garage waiting for my one day to come.

Exactly....I want to drive it where and whenI want....not when and where they say. I just talked to a Safeco rep., they have a pretty good policy and on stated value.

Be sure to look around at other collector car insurance companies as well.

This has been covered before on the alfa romeo web ring I'm on, but unfortunately I forgot who they said was the "best". From what I do remember though, there are ones out there that do NOT have the mileage limits or the "must be garaged" clause. Do a little research and go with an agreed value policy. That is my plan.

I've never been told anything like this at all. I've used them twice for towing, and they never asked what I was doing or any other questions other than where are you and where do you want it towed to. I love doing business with them. They also support our car shows. Good people.

I've been an active member of a couple other classic Ford boards (Mustangs and Broncos), and it seems that when this kind of thread comes up there's a good number of people who are told about the restrictions, and those who aren't told (or aren't aware for some reason). Some are asked if the rig is modified--bigger tires, etc.--and some aren't.

However, I'm inclined to believe that regardless of what level of detail is told over the phone or via email, it's spelled out in the policy and there are lots of restrictions like not driving to work. And I wouldn't want that policy if I get in an accident driving to work
