I am helping out my neighbor with his 97 mountaineer 5.0. failed emisions & had it scanned, came up with a p0153 bank 2 sensor 1 & a p1405 aux emision control. I checked the o2 connectors & all ok. he brought the truck new & has never replaced the o2s. currently has 160k. he brought a new o2s but is not sure what side bank 2 is, his chiltons manual doesn't say & I don't remember how ford was doing it back then.looking from the front of the motor which is Bank 1 & bank 2? he's counting on it being just the o2 & not the cats also.any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
Before you go too crazy changing O2 sensors, you might also check for vacuum leaks. Since you don't also have a code for a lean condition, the O2 sensors are probably the issue, but vacuum leaks are another possible cause for the P0153 code.
The P1405 code is "P1405 - DPF EGR Sensor Upstream Hose Off or Plugged" and for this code the service manual explains, "While driving, the EGR monitor commands the EGR valve closed and checks the differential pressure across the EGR orifice. The test fails when the signal from the DPF EGR sensor indicates EGR flow is in the negative direction."
A few items to check according to the service manual:
Upstream hose is disconnected
Upstream hose is plugged (ice)
Plugged or damaged EGR tube
Look for signs of water or icing in hose
Verify hose connection and routing (no excessive dips)
Verify DPF EGR sensor proper mounting and function (view DPF EGR PID while applying and releasing vacuum directly to sensor with a hand pump)
