Question for Star

Star, or anyone else that has experience. I am asking star because I know he had dealt with big trucks. I "found" a hydraulic pump that came off of a COE. It is about 20 years old. Seems to be in pretty good shape and does work. My question is this, could I use that as a pump for a dump bed? What do cabs on the COE's usually weigh? I would not haul more than 1.5 to 2 tons on the truck. Would that pump handle that?

Most of the COE's have a manual pump similar to a bottle jack that then fills a cylinder to lift the cab. Is this the style of pump you are talking about? Or is this an electric driven pump?

As far as what a pump will handle, there are two main factors in hydraulics. Pressure, and volume. The pump may put out, let's say 2000PSI. However, at the other end, the cylinder size can change greatly. Since that pressure is exerted on the area of the piston, a 4" diameter(area = 12.5 sq. inches) cylinder has way more strength than a 2" diameter cylinder. (Area = 3.14 Sq. inches). However, the volume of oil one has to move to do this has also increased greatly, requiring a larger reservoir, and unless something else is changed, the larger cylinder will also travel much slower.

Like greywind said. I think it would be very slow, but they were powering two small cylinders. I have never used the pump or anything else, but did use the cylinders for a gooseneck tilt trailer and they would pickup a car allright, so it could work if your cylinders were not to large.

One thing too, any of these pumps I've seen were double acting, or power in, AND power out. On a dump box you really only need power for up, gravity will take care of the return. I always thought they would be an awesome power pack for a hydraulic press.

Not saying they don't make them, but I have never seen an electric pump on a cabover, I still have a couple of air ones that I have saved, that can also be hand pumped.

Holy cow F250 that '64 is AWESOME. Man if only......LOL I have a flatbed for my 94 dually, i paid 400 for it solid steel w/headache rack, gooseneck, and drop on the a$$. But I want it to dump. I am sooooooo tired of hauling my dumptrailer, dropping it off. Then running back to get the flatbed with the excavator or skidsteer. PITA! It is also nice to have when cleaning up sites after I am finished. Stump grinding shavings, brush from land clearing. My g/f's mom has 5 acres that is supposedly on my agenda, we will see. LOL Fill dirt, sand, rock old fencing when I replace with new. Just way too much driving with the dumptrailer and going back and forth. Really sucks when your jobs are 2 hours apart! I was thinking about putting the flatbed on and utilizing this pump and some rams to build my own dump. Bad thing is the 94 is a 2wd, I used 4wd ALOT! I might have to do this to my 93 250 but I really like that truck the way it is. LOL Spoiled me it did!

Star, I might be wrong. I need to take pics of it and show you. I will try to do that tomorrow. I am sure you are right. I got this from a mechanic, and that is what he described it as. This guy is a younger guy, so I am placing my bets on the 'ole man on this one. LOL

It is possible some of the later ones had an electric pump. lol
Just because I have never seen one doesn't mean they were not available. lol
Does it have a hand pump also.

haha that is very sweet.
you would have to set the thing on a newer f450/550 chassis or something or you would never find parts lol.
man what cool styling they had back then.man.
id nick name that beast "big red" and be in heaven lol.

so ideally you need this:
Flatbed Pickup Dump Bed Body Hoist Kit. Dump Truck. - eBay (item 310151831047 end time Apr-23-10 23:03:22 PDT)

but new price will set ya back.
for a work rig though,it will pay you back and then put you well ahead in no time.
problem is often though,is coming up the $ at first.
