rust repair using solder

I fixed a rust hole about the size of a dime on my fender by grinding all the paint off the area and soldering a piece of galvanized sheet metal over top with a propane torch. I then ground the edges down and used some filler to smooth it all out.

The metal I used was 1 gauge thicker than that used for heating ducts.

When I was done I soaked the back side with rust converter and then rust inhibitor.

What do you guys think of this method? Will it last?

You should be ok if you got the rust stopped. The more I see of rust, the more impressed I am of it's ability to keep going.

You may have problems with the flux in the solder. If it is acid based this will present adhesion problems down the road. Wash with water next time to neutralize the acid. It was common at one time to punch holes in sheet metal and insert a slide hammer into the hole to pull out dents. The holes were then filled usind a soldering gun. It helped if you countersunk the hole first. This added a little more volume to the hole and aided in applying the solder.
