I normally hang out in 7.3 forum but I am think about buying a used 2008 F250 6.4. I was able to pull up the window sticker and the powertrain warranty is listed as 3 years 36, 000 miles. I was under the impression that diesel powertrain warranty is 5/100?
Can anyone verify what it is?
Also, is there a guide to buying a used 6.4, you know, what are the telltale signs of condition and maintenance?
If I buy it, I hope it gets at least 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on highway unloaded.
As for 14 city and 17 hwy...maybe the 17 hwy but never the 14 city. I can get around 13.
This motor is much different than the 7.3. For as much power as it puts out it is also emissions controlled so that holds back the mpgs.
I truely think the days of great mpg's in oil burners is gone. It will still do better than a gasser but not much.
6.4 issues mostly seen centered around the radiators as rmosso1 indicated, EGR can be an issue if you drive in town alot and don't work the motor, some minor problems with some job 1 recalls for injectors.
Biggest item to me here is fuel filters and oil changes. You must be up on that and do not skip. You the motorcraft filters and change then on time.

Just bought my '08 350 with 21,000 miles. On the way home (900 miles) I got 15.1 on the first tank heading into a strong headwind going in the 65 mph range and the second tank was 16.6 in the 70 mph range. Can't help you with city driving. Hope this helps.
Thistle, hi. Are you using the computer? If so I think most on here will tell you the actual mileage will be 1.5 to 2 mpg lower (worse) than the computer. As you probably know it's hard to get a good hand calculated number with diesel. you gotta really be paitent to fill to the same level 2 or 3 times in a row. To the OP. Based on being on here for most of a year now (over from 7.3) I don't think you can get a true 17 highway without some mods that will void the warranty. I also moved to a 6.4 from a 7.3. You came to the right place though because I have developed a 2 step plan for dealing with the mileage on the 6.4L. 1. Get a large after market tank so the fill ups are not so frequent. 2. Put the credit card in and pump, never ever look up at the pump. Just tear off the reciept and stuff in your pocket, don't look at it. Good luck if you make the change, but if fuel mileage is real important to you be careful.

You are correct the computer was showing better mileage than what I was getting but the 15.1 and 16.6 was hand calculated and I was taking it easy to be sure. When I left the dealership I stopped to top off the tank so I could get a more accurate indication of mpg and to my amazement I was only able to squeeze in another couple gallons, some of which was burned during the test drive so I was quite impressed the dealership actually filled it all the way up when they sold it to me. Regarding the warranty, senix quoted in this thread "5/60 on powertrain and 7/100K on the motor." I just bought a used '08 F-250 CC PSD tonight, and the dealer did tell me about the 3yr/36k on everything, 5yr/60k powertrain but mentioned nothing of the 7yr/100K on the motor. Should I verify this 7/100 with the dealer??

Read carefully and slowly the warranties. You will note only specific items eliminated in the extended warranties. I personally think the warranties will get worse as FORD's fortunes grow with their stock price. They are top dog now, and we as consumers are of little use to them. I am disappointed from what I read, and what I know. Like a line from X FILES: "TRUST NO ONE"!

I'm not sure that's how it works. Seems to me that as the company sells more product, the profits get higher, as the profits get higher the stock price goes up (usually) as the stock price goes up the executives get more compensation, which means they are incentivised to sell more product. The warranty is a big part of selling cars, (ask Iaccoa). Plus, with more profits the operations budget grows and there is more money for warranty, not less. of course I could be wrong so if there is an MBA on here that would like to correct me, go ahead.
Mere mortals KNOW NOT what the deal was between FORD and Navastar regarding the 6.0 & 6.4 diesel engines. Perhaps my comments are narrow, but I bot a FORD, from a FORD dealer with an International engine. I just feel that when a warranty situation arises, it becomes an adverseral relationship, much like a court case.
No one wants to give a straight answer you can hang your hat on, just innuendo. You read the 5 year 100,000 mile warranty and tell me different. How many of us completely understand all the components in these engines. Very few I would think.
Well I didn't buy the 08. I did, however, go to a local Ford Dealer. He is giving me $10,700 off of sticker on a 2010. From using KBB.com, that is about $6000 below invoice which sounds right because there is $6000 Ford rebate. I imagine I can work them a little harder for a better deal but I terrified to drop 30-40K in this economy.
The 6.7 sure sounds good on paper, but when hasn't Ford marketed a new engine as the next best thing to sliced bread?
I don't tow anything and only haul heavy stuff rarely. I do plow my driveway, family and friends when it snows. I just love an F250/F350 body style and much prefer the diesel. Since I do more short trips and city driving, a gasser would be better for me.but I don't want a slug and I don't want worse than 12 mpg. I want better and more HP and toque. I also want reliability and longevity.
