I am replacing the front diff on my f150. its a dana 44 twin I beam. i have all bolts removed, driveshaft is removed. only thing holding it in is the axles. how do i get it out? please dont tell me i have to take one of the hubs completely off...
Yes you have to take one of the hubs apart, the drivers side would be best because the drive axle simply slides into the diff. You will also have to take a clip off the boot over the slip joint in the passenger side drive axle because the inner portion of that axle is c-clipped into the diff.
so whats the easiest way to get the driver side axle out? i have to hub off and i removed the nut off the upper ball joint but can't get the lower off. do i really have to take the ball joints off to do this?
No that's not right. You have to remove the hub guts and then the wheel bearing retainer nuts with the special socket, the outer hub and rotor assembly will then come off in 1 piece. Then the inner hub has to come off by removing the 6 bolts(I think) that fasten it to the yoke and prying it off.. which may take some persuasion with a BFH and chissel. Then the side axle will simply unplug from the diff.
Get a big rubber mallet, and a a can of PB Blaster. Soak it in PB, Hit it HARD from all directions, soak it in some more PB, repeat till it comes off.
Spray the PB first thing, the longer it sits, the better it works
Used that method on a 85 bronco axle, was heck getting the 1st one off, quit for the night and in the morning i got to the other side and it came off in my hand because i had sprayed it when i first started and it had sat overnight.
