rear Diff bearing...

I have a 2000 F150 and the rear diff is leaking. I took it to a backyard mechanic and he said that the sleave and seal seem to be leaking. If he can remove the bearing from the front side, he said that it would be a fairly easy job to do, but if the bearing does not come off, then he'd have to take out th e"guts" of the diff. Can someone plz tell me if the bearing can be removed from the front side easily?

Thanks

T

NO! A word of advice. Your backyard mechanic freind doesn't know what he is doing. Take it to a trusted shop that does work on rear differentials. Your Ford dealer is a good choice.

If the pinion seal and bearing are in need of service, the entire differential needs to be completely dissassembled for the pinion to come out. Then the pinion bearing has to be pressed off of the pinion shaft and a new one pressed on. Then it has to be reassembled with a new pinion seal and a new crush sleeve. The pinion nut has to be tightened exactly right too.

All of this needs to be done by someone that knows what they are doing. While it is all a part, it would be a good idea to replace the axle bearings and seals. If the differential is a limited slip model, then replace the clutches too. Good luck!

why would you take the pinion out and the bearing off to replace the seal, slinger and dust shield??? they have to go on from the shaft end when installed. someone is feeding you bunch of bull or you messed up a little on your question.

king is right, a knowledgeable person is worth the price for diff work. but that doesnt mean you have to go to a dealer $$$$. id be hesitant of any one that called the carrier group the "guts"

you dont need a rear end rebuild for a leaky seal.
