My dad has a '91 F150 and he's having nothing but problems with all the emissions crap. I don't know how much emissions stuff is on my '81. It doesn't have the original engine. It came with a 300 in '81, but I bought it with the 302 in it. I used to have a 300, so I'm glad I have the 302.
Jeramy, both of my tanks work. It's just the front tank's sending unit that doesn't work.
I used to have the 302, so I'm glat I have the 300
Yah, but while the 300 is reliable and strong, that's all it is. The 302 has the potential of being strong, fast, reliable, and has a long list of available modifications. I've never seen a 300 with more than 150 hp. There are 302/351s that are pushing 350 hp!
Plus, the 300 doesn't get much better gas mileage. My '99 Explorer has the 4.0 and gets around 17.5 mpg. My dad's '91 F150 has the 4.9 and gets around 11-12 mpg. I've read that the 302 averages between 10-13 mpg.

I've seen a few 300's that have been modded to keep up if not surpass a mildly modded 302.The only reasons 300's aren't heavily modded is because they're considered work motors,so there's not much of an aftermarket. They also didn't come in anything but Trucks and Broncos compared to the 5.0 which was in just about anything Ford could stuff it in.I'm pretty sick of seeing 302's.They're great motors don't get me wrong, but they're everywhere, and way too popular.I just like to be different I guess.
How 'bout this?
How many of you have a reg. cab, short bed F100, or F150 with (factory) dual tanks? I'd never seen a reg. cab short bed with two tanks, until I bought mine. If mine is rare, please let me know. I want to restore it if it is a collectable.
I'm not asking for production numbers this time, all I want to know is how common or uncommon trucks like mine are.
Thanks!
my 85 shortbed 4 x4 hsd factory duel tanks----explorer version
I just bought two shortbed F150s both having dual gas tanks. The 84 is a carb'ed 302 and the 86 is a 4x4 EFI 302.
I am considering converting the EFI to a carb setup ( Weiand Stealth and Holley 4 bbl) and geting rid of all the emissions, cats etc. It is about to become emissions exempt in Texas (25 years old). Before deciding, I will try to get the EFI 302 running.
BTW I have the bed from the 84 in the Classified section for $200 if anyone is interested.
I just bought an 86 4x4 shortbed with dual tanks. Presently the front tank leaks and the rear doesn't work (fuel line rotted out). i've yet to determine if that'll be the only problem with the tank though.
