How 'bout this?
How many of you have a reg. cab, short bed F100, or F150 with (factory) dual tanks? I'd never seen a reg. cab short bed with two tanks, until I bought mine. If mine is rare, please let me know. I want to restore it if it is a collectable.
I'm not asking for production numbers this time, all I want to know is how common or uncommon trucks like mine are.
Would you classify them a collectable or uncommon vehicle?
It would take a fair amount of time and money to restore my truck, but it would be worth it if there aren't very many like it on the road.
Your best bet is to restore it to how YOU want it. These trucks might have different or rare options, BUT they are not like certain vehicles that have high collector value, or with certain followings of collectors that are restoring them to factory. Sure there are certain trucks that have been restored, but on the whole you would not get out of it what you put in. Have fun with your truck and make it YOURS.
Thanks bghnkin,
I actually was wanting to customize it to my liking while still resotoring it. Kind of a resto-mod if you will. What I'd like to do is put period correct Mustang GT heads and a racing cam in it, plus the rearend gears out of a Mustang. With it's lowered stance and custom wheels, this would make a great street truck!
Have fun with it. It shounds like what you are going to do will make it look and run better. It also sounds like the mods that you are planning are reversible, so if a few years down the road these trucks for some reason jump in value (zombies taking over and people need reliable trucks to make their getaway to the cuts) then you could easily turn it back to factory!

Shortbed trucks with dual tanks isn't rare. I know a guy that owned 3 of them at once.
While I view this body style as one of the best, I doubt there will ever be much demand for unmodded trucks of this era. It was the time of too much pollution control stuff on carbs, and early EFI that doesn't quite meet todays standards.
Therefore, do what will make you happy with the truck. If that's a ~450HP small block under the hood, so be it. As long as it is what you want.
I agree ('80-86 IS the best body style made so far). This is my chance to give this old truck new life. Plus, it'll give me a reason to practice my rust repair and Bondo applying skills. I've never modded an engine before, but then again I've never had enough money to do it either. With my "new" job (Nov. '09), I should be able to save some money each week so I can continue my project.
Yeah, the 80-86 shares the same ride & handling of the 87-96, without the EFI and computers for the engine, trans, and brakes. As they are now hitting the 30 year mark, they are also considered classics by most all insurance and state agencies. This can lead to relaxed emission testing standards in some states.
My dad has a '91 F150 and he's having nothing but problems with all the emissions crap. I don't know how much emissions stuff is on my '81. It doesn't have the original engine. It came with a 300 in '81, but I bought it with the 302 in it. I used to have a 300, so I'm glad I have the 302.
Jeramy, both of my tanks work. It's just the front tank's sending unit that doesn't work.
