Steering wheel swap; adding audio/hvac controls

I know there are threads covering this topic but I have not read any where there is a definitive answer as to whether you can swap in a steering wheel with the audio/hvac controls where the original wheel did not have them.

I bought a steering wheel with the controls but I really would rather not pull my existing wheel if it is not going to work. Is there anybody out there who has done this and can say for certain that it will work??

Thanks for your time, Tom

The Excursion wheel controls are just like the buttons in the first pic of RMBC's post here. Cruise control functions on the left, and fan/temp/radio controls on the right.

If you have the manual heater controls on your X (three *****), the steering wheel controls WILL NOT control the heat/AC functions. Doesn't mean you cant use the wheel though... You might gain audio controls, but I have not seen that proven yet.

what year is your X? (I assume 2002-2005?) I'm pretty sure the wiring is there. But who knows... Ford's wiring harnesses are a nightmare. I can't beleive how many things were different between my 2000 XLT and my 2002 Limited - I'd estimate that 90% of the wiring and connectors were different.

But based on what I've seen with the few wheels I've messed with, I'd say chances are good that your HVAC controls would work.

Mine is a 2003; can't believe that someone would spend $50K for the truck and save on the steering wheel option! How much more could it have been relative to the overall cost of the truck?

Leaving for Easter vacation tonight; I have an 11 hour trip ahead of me; sure would have been nice to have the steering wheel installed, Sirius hooked up, iPod interface hooked up................oh well!

I put the navigator steering wheel on my X. but thats because my factory wheel was worn out. since mine is an 01, i dont have the electronic hvac. so, the only reason i did it was because i love the wood wheel, and because i got it for about $60 brand new. i never figured out how to rewire the cruise control on it yet. just love the look.

oh, the most important thing was to make sure that the splines on the column and the whel match. they did change.

Racer.....

What year Navigator wheel will match up to my 2000 Ex toothed steering spline? What year is the wheel your showing above?

I've performed the same thing.

Check here on the third page for my post....

TexasEx, yes it does. AND, thanks to all of you that posted pics on the wiring of the cruise control. I just got it working tonight. I have to wake up earlier than usual tomorrow and button it up before I go to work without an airbag and a bunch of wires hanging out of the steering wheel. I am so excited that I finally got it working just in time for the long drive to indiana for the excursion diversion #2. yey to all.
