Hey all, just wondering if anyone has worked out a wiring diagram for the steering wheel audio controls? I am trying to hook up to an aftermarket Sony system.
I have found this picture if it helps...
2002 Ford Explorer Limited

You don't mention what year you're interested in, but the service manual does often show the resistor values for the steering wheel controls. For example, pasted below is the schematic for the 2002 Explorer.
Sorry, I did put "2002 Explorer Limited" under the picture, but it obviously wasn't visible enough, so, good guess!!
Thanks very much for replying to my post - I'm sure I'll be able to work out something between these two pictures.

So you did, I missed that.
It would appear that if you plan to re-use the factory steering wheel controls you'll need to change some resistors (probably surface mount), re-run some of the traces (unless you re-purpose buttons) and limit the functionality of the aftermarket deck slightly. It does seem like a fun project though.
I think there are also some aftermarket interfaces that will do this for you as well with a little box that translates the OEM current drive to what the Sony deck is expecting for that function. I think the brand is PAC...? Something like Pacific Audio Controllers? If you're not as much interested in the project as you in the functions you might want to look them up.
