Question Toss stock fuel filter??

Just finished putting two new tires on wife's car and oil change, new chain/sprockets and shocks on the motorcycle, four new tires on truck, new front brake pads, changed coolant filter, oil & oil by-pass filters, trans filter and filter that came with my Harpoon/Hutch mod and since I'm now broke *grin* I have a question about the stock fuel filter.

Since I have the (huge/long) fuel filter/water seperator under the truck that I put in when I did the Hutch/Harpoon mod, do I really need the stock fuel filter on top of the engine? If not, would there be any advantage in just putting the stock filter cap on without a filter in the bowl? CAN you put the stock cap on without a filter and expect it to not leak?

Inquiring (and broke) minds want to know!

Thanks, CedricR.

im not to sure, but i would think the filter that you put in instead of the tank screens is replacing the tank screens not the fuel filter under the hood. i mean for the 15 bucks or so it costs for a fuel filter i would just keep it there.

If the aux fuel filter is a water separator and the filter is rated at the same micron size you do not need the stock filter.

BUT, there is a valve at the bottom of the stem that the opening in the center of the filter fits around. Without the fuel bowl cap pushing down on the filter the valve will not open and there will be no fuel supply to the heads. It is to prevent the engine from running without a filter in the fuel bowl. That valve can be removed after removing the stem. I saw a write-up or video on it but can't find it.

I think if your filter under the truck is pre fuel pump, if pump craps out u will not have any fitration between pump & engine. If filter under truck is after the fuel pump u are probably ok to remove it.

I'd leave it for no other reason than if the factory pump breaks you don't want that junk in your injectors.

I put in one of those sight glass filters after the pump to stop anything that the pump might spit out.

I would leave the factory filter installed as a final defence.
NEVER run without a fuel filter between the pump and the injectors.
That pump outputs brush material, and very fine metal pieces over time.
Where is all this worn off metal going to go if the filter doesn't stop it?

And the same question for the brush material. Where is it going to end up if the filter doesn't stop it?

Yes, that'll work too. But I don't think the OP was interested at this point in doing the bowl delete and a RR. And even then I don't think those sight glass filters do all that great job of filtering small particles.

FWIW I keep the factory filter in even after Air Dog install for the same reasons others have stated, if the factory fuel pump goes it'll catch the shrapnel, a little extra peace of mind.

I did the opposite. Put a see through screen filter in as a pre-pump (it was good enough before, right?), and left the stock filter in place. I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. Supports plenty of HP, too.

As usual, there is a wealth of knowledge here at FTE!
I am running the stock pump (not even sure I remember where it is!) so I'll leave the stock filter in place even though the aux filter is a paper media filter and has three times the filter area as the stock filter. The stock filter did look blacker than the aux filter.

Crap in the injectors.... make yer skin crawl, doesn't it?

Thanks guys, CedricR.

if you do remove the bowl and filter you must replace it with a 2 micron filter after the pump..for me the filter cost alone is 8 bucks now...here is a NAPA ## if you chose to go that rout

filter base napa #4770
2 micron NAPA Wix filter 3528
