Transfer case fluid change question.

I drained the transfer case and started to fill it up. I put in 2 full quarts but it never came out of the fill hole. Am I good or do I need to buy some more ATF and put it in?

Thanks for the input.

I'm wondering this too. I think 2 quarts is probably good if you didn't spill any, but not positive.

I added more fluid and filled it to the fill bolt - took apprx. an extra quart. I have over 30k miles that way and have had no problems.

Noted, so do you think I will be ok with 2 quarts as prescribed in the manual? I have no problem with adding a third quart if you think it needs it. I do respect your input.

Hey,
Just chimming in, apologize for the tangent. How often should the transfer case & rear end (front & rear -4x4) fluid be changed on the 6.0?

Thanks any input is appreciated.

What a coincedence...I just did this today. The old stuff came out like water...very thin. I used Mobil1 ATF Syn...2.2 qts...did the job. Not exactly 2 and 1/2 qt...but close. I think you're fine. You can always top it off later when you pick up another quart. Same stuff I use in my Power Steering.

So what fluid did you use? I ask because the owners manual states to use MERCON, so I went to the dealer and bought 2 qts. told him I needed txfr case fluid and he came back with 2 qts. Took to my shop and drained the old stuff, put in the new and as setting the last quart on the ground noticed it was MERCON V! So I decided to read the bottle and it states specifically not to use in transfer cases! WTF? Called the parts counter and they said that's all we have, well my next question is "what are you guys putting in transfer cases?" He called me back after an hour and said he had the guys in the back look it up and found that MERCON V has replaced MERCON, I told him "yeah, I found that too" but why does it say to not use it on the bottle? Long story- short.......they don't have a clue! I asked if there is a tsb or something in writing from Ford that states it is o.k. to put the MERCON V in the transfer case.......he said no. Again....WTF?

Mercon V replaces Mercon. Pretty much everyone uses a Mercon V or synthetic Mercon V for the transfer case without any problems.

Just a note. 2 qts does not bring the level to the "full" line. It takes almost 3q ts to get it there.
