I'm gettin my trans rebuilt and need input on the t/c. The truck is used mostly for towing. Upgrades are cold air intakke, 4" straight exhaust, hypertech programmer, and banks six gun. Thanks for your input.
Yea, who's doing the rebuild? What upgraded parts are they using? What shift kit are they installing? What auxiliary cooler are you going to run? Have you got a set of guages to monitor Pyro, boost and tranny temps?
How big is the cooler? What about gauges? Triple disc converter as mentioned. Upgraded internals and either Transgo or Sonnax modifications to the valve bodies at a minimum.
Most of us go with a 6.0L cooler (about 3x the size of stock) in place of the stocker, and hopefully you're getting solid upgraded parts internally. The two go-to guys are John Wood if you're out west, or Brian at BTS of your in the mid-west/south. I don't know of anyone in the NE unfortunately with the track records & history of those two. Where are you located?
I have gauges to hook up. 3600, or 4300 for a trans is out of the question. my truck has been down since Nov. Im pullin it and reinstalling to save on labor.
Billet face dual clutch Recon converter (nothing great) TransGo shift kit

I thought the stock trans with the TransGo shifted firmer from 1st to 2nd than the rebuilt but the rebuilt seems more consistant in shift quality. The trans shop does a bunch of Ford and Chevy diesels, modified and race cars and he believes anything that might be used for towing should not shift really firm as they are more prone internal failure. Also, I had synthetic in the stock trans and the rebuilt runs noticeably hotter with normal Mercon. I might switch to synthetic soon with the trans approval, of course. I don't tow much so I never worried about coolers.
If I had to do it over again, I 'd invest more in the converter and maybe a cooler. Definitely synthetic fluid but that can be changed at anytime.
Actually, the converter might be the multidisc one but again, it is a Recon and nothing exotic.
Trans shop guarantied the trans to take 500hp and a beating plowing snow. Other trans shops saw the snow plow and said rebuild with no warranty. We had so much snow this winter in Maryland that a couple of the trans shops I visited had plow trucks they were working on. I burned mine up plowing and getting unstuck.
I would say yes to the shift kit (TansGo or Sonnax) and someone did a 6.0 t/c a while back. It fits but you have to machine the crank spacer and shim the starter to make it work. It would be a relatively inexpensive upgrade. Here is the write-up on it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...de-w-pics.html
