I want to build my truck up to tow. I was looking towards you guys to give me some good advise on what i need to do. I have the 6637 intake and a new tranny that can handle you to 500 horse. and looking for mpg.
Who built your automatic tranny to handle 500hp???
If your looking to turn your truck into a towing machine the first thing that I would do is install an aftermarket downpipe to let that engine breathe. A set of gauges is highly recommened as well.
An intercooler will help your exhaust temperatures out pulling those long hills during the summer months. Combined with a decent tuner you can really reduce your EGT's when hooked to the trailer.
The real question to ask yourself is how many lbs to your intend to tow with your pickup.
I had the the tranny done out at diesel tech out in ca. I think thats what they said. I was thinking going with staight pipe, intercooler, a tonywildman chip, maybe stage one injector.
I would opt for an intercooler before I even thought about the injectors. I have my 97 F250 tows more than any pickup should pull and has exactly what you are talking about, minus the injectors and IC. I started with a Down pipe, then went with chip. Then I got gauges and cold air intake, and if I had it all to do over again on the non-intercooled truck I would have honestly bought the gauges before the chip was even put on it if I was towing a lot and on a tight budget.
I did my mods one at a time starting with the DP and 6637. She pulls her guts out now, pulled a 24K 42' 5th wheel trailer over the mountains, no problem. Just watch your EGT's.
How much do you want to tow?
How much do you want to spend?
Answer these two and we should be able to get you on the right path. Also tell us what mods you presently have or is the 6637 the only mod so far?
I have stageII's and can tow VERY well. But you need to have the right setup for what you want to tow. I replaced turbo, did intercooler, got live tuned yada, yada, yada.
Basically it all boils down to how much you want to tow and spend.
Looking to tow a 6 horse trailer loaded down and tack room. hard to say a good amount i dont want to give up my 7.3. and for mod all i have is the 6637. The list above is what i was thinking of doing. i was hoping to get advise one on what part i need give a an ideal on what im getting into.
As everyone said money is the big factor.
IMHO Wire up your exhaust brake and get guages, 2. down pipe, 3. intercooler and large trans cooler (you have a auto right?) (you'll see why on the hills), 4. good chip (tw, etc), 5. If you have lots of $$ and want to run with Neal on the hills turbo, better HPOP, and stage II's
