Hey fellas Im a newbie here and have a question for some of you fellows who may have experience here. My 68 F100 has the original steering column with an aftermarket steering wheel that is kinda right in my lap. Im a big guy(about 260 lbs) but it seems to me that someone has had to have had the same problem. Can I safely cut the column and shorten it or should I replace it with a newer column? I would rather keep my key on the dash like it is, so if any of you fellas have ever done this how about give me some pointers...any help would be appreciated.
The problem with shortening it is th that it moves it down more than it moves it away. I put a tilt column from a 79 in my 71 then went with a smaller after market wheel. If you want to stay with the original look; i believe the 79 wheel is smaller and will still look like it belongs. I found my column on ebay
yes the 79 ignition is still on the dash the emergency flashers are on the column but I wired mine so that they work with the dash switch. The hardest part is the Park/Neutral/Reverse switch. The 79 switch is on the transmission, the 67-72 switch is on the column. I just bypassed mine (so it will start even if it is in gear). There are threads on here about how people have overcome that problem.
