I am trying to locate where the trs is on my 97 f-250, You guys helped me figure out the problem but I checked this sight and all others and no where does it show you where it is and how to change it.I've even checked for the part on the internet and nobody shows it. Is it only a stealership part? I'll try more research today and call the stealer for pricing
Here is the part number from Ford for the TRS ( its also called a MLPS, manual lever position switch) F5TZ-7A247-AA. And here is what is looks like http://www.electricaladvantage.net/i...IMG_1919.1.JPG. It is located on the drivers side of the transmission and its almost in the middle front to back, and its just above the base of the case just before the pan lip.
Well it can be very simple, but if it's the original one it can be a little bit of a ***** haha. If it's original I would get under there and soak it with PB Blaster for a good few days if the nut looks rusty at all. You take the two bolts off either side, disconnect the linkage, and then remove the nut that is in the center. That nut is the peice that can become a nightmare to deal with. When I swaped mine from tranny to tranny I broke the nut and the stud off and then I couldn't get the sensor to seperate from the case so I broke that off to. If this happens to you it is NOT the end of the world, as I thought haha. You will have to drain the transmission and take the pan off, and on the back side of that rod that goes through the case (that the sensor slides onto) is some more linkage and a gear looking peice. You have to take that apart and that whole rod will slide out and you can replace that too, I don't know how much it would cost because I had an extra one but you might have to go to ford to atleast figure out what the part number is for it. Here is a site that carries the sensor and has it in stock for about $35, I don't know how much the dealer will want but if its close to the same price then this is a part that I would get from them. I have't dealt with this company but just figured I would throw it out there for you E4OD / 4R100 Manual Lever Position Switch
You don't need the tool. With the trans in neutral align the two marks on the TRS and it's adjusted.
Sometimes it will.
Good evening Mark. I was hoping you could advise on whether I can use a different TRS than what is installed on my truck. My truck's sensor connection faces up, but all those that I see for sale come out at a different angle.
Thank you for all your comments - you're definitely an asset on this site!
Thanks Mark. I will keep searching. On another note. This issue came about on my home after moving from one home to another. The move is about 260miles. The first trip was with a fully loaded trailer - no issues. On the road back, around 13miles after leaving my new home, the ABS light came on and I also felt a drag on the trailer as if there was braking occurring. I got out so many times on that route to make sure no brakes were being glazed on either the empty trailer or the truck. I even stopped on a level bit of road, put the truck in D and let it coast under its own power without giving it gas, there was no drag, truck pulled fine. There was a lot of snow on the road so I could not hear if the trailer tires were being dragged as if they were seizing up but it didn't feel like it. This whole drag issue only feels like a drag when I'm doing 50 mph as the revs run into 2000rpm. If I push to 70mph its gone, but as soon as there is the slightest hill or let-off on the gas pedal the truck drops a gear and sits on 2400rpm. I could not drive at 70 or above because I was in a blizzard, but doing 50 all the way at 2000rpm was amazingly annoying. And it killed my mileage. When I got back to the old home, I unhooked the trailer and took the truck for a test drive. ABS light still on, and going up to 80, lifting off the gas pedal numerous times to see if she will drop to a lower gear but nothing happened. As if nothing was wrong to begin with.
These were the symptoms which brought me to the site and I figured it would be trans related. With more context, do you still think its the TRS/MLPS? Do you think the ABS has anything to do with it? I have another trip up to the new home the weekend and trying to resolve the issue before then.
I can't imagine how you came up with the TRS as being at fault here.
The PCM uses vehicle speed as an input to control the transmission. It receives vehicle speed from the vehicle speed sensor on the rear axle. That sensor is also used by the ABS. Since you know that there is an ABS problem, it seems VERY likely that if you fix the ABS problem you will also fix the transmission problem.
