Just wanted to say thanks again. I knew absolutely nothing about cars or trucks before I found this forum. I did not know a distributor from a camshaft. I can now identify almost every part in an engine and what it does. I have learned so much so quickly I cannot believe it. I really appreciate the help from everyone, especially Fordzzzz77 and Georgedavila.
Good news. I bid on the rods on ebay and I won, so I figured I would talk to the seller and see if he had 3/8ths sets. So, he had 3/8inch chrome moly guideplates and 7/16ths roller studs. He also has 3/8ths pushrods which he can sell me after I check the length. So the auction worked out great.
erik185..........Slow down for a moment! I'm some what confuesed on what your wanting to do? You said you ordered the Crane Conversion kit and now you won the auction on e-bay for the pushrods, guide plates and studs??!! Which one are you going to use? because you can't use both on the same head. So it's one or the other. The e-bay auction you won will require machine work. Plus those push rod might not work because the lenght might be to long. The Crane conversion kit has it's own guide plate. See pic below. After you get the heads set up with one or the other type configuration is get the push rod lenght check and order the correct lenght push rods, this is the last thing you should do to finish off the valve train.
Hi Erik185, Long time no type at each ather.
Just got my heads back from shop. (they look so clean)
He set me up with Lunati Roller rockers and conversion kit.
The studs and guides do not need any machining.
and the nylon guides can be used the none hardend push rod.
They look just like Fordzzzz77 photo.
Well I did not know that the conversion kit actually acted as guide plates. But won't the studs still work? Also i will not get the pushrods until I tell him what size I need.
What's up vancloud?
Oh BTW, I dont want to act like a jerk but my name is actually erikL85 just a lowercase L. I should have made it capitol but I use it on all my email addresses and other forums. It has caused some mistakes though.
Thanks
And you're talking about looking for early heads, which may give you a compression ratio with your existing pistons that won't run on pump gas.
As Fordzzzz77 suggests, slow down and do a little planning. Regardless of which direction you go, early or late heads, push rod length is the last piece of your valve train assembly.
If you go with the late heads and conversion kit, you have everything you need to assemble the valve train and then measure for push rod length.
With early heads, you need to get the bosses machined, bolt on the guideplates/rockers and measure for push rod length.
I'm repeating what Fordzzzz77 said to emphasize the need to make a plan and follow it.
Well I am going for the late heads now, but in the future I may consider going for the early heads. I don't think you guys understand, I am getting the pushrods after I measure, then I will buy the pushrods when I have the correct measurement. I will just re-sell the guideplates and the studs, or keep them if I ever get earlier heads. It is no big deal.
Sorry for the miss spilling of the name
The rod guides that were on Ebay reguier machining the stud boss to make them flate. The new push rod guides fit with no machinning. Good luck
