If this is for your new engine with the .530 cam and heads with new valves, I'd suggest you measure for what you need with a pushrod checker. And don't forget to buy hardened pushrods or the guide plates will ruin regular pushrods. I don't know if you're running the '77 pedestals or rail rockers.
What heads are you using? All that stuff is for early heads and will require rail or roller rockers. If you're using the later heads, you have pedestal rocker arms.
I would still recommend measuring for what length you need to achieve correct valve train geometry. Your school should have a push rod length checker, you can make one from an old push rod or buy one for about $25.
I believer I have D3VE heads, at least that is what I remember from the casting number. I am putting roller rockers on them though. The only reason I am anxious about those ones on ebay is because they are way cheaper than buying them anywhere else and the auction ends today.
Using D3 heads with roller rockers requires some machining and/or a conversion kit to use guide plates and roller rockers. Either way, you're going to change your valve train geometry. I know the price is tempting, but if your push rod requirements turn out to be longer/shorter than the ebay stuff, those probably aren't returnable.
The ebay ad didn't specify 5/16" or 3/8" push rods/guide plates, so I'd bet they're 5/16". CJ/SCJs came with 5/16" push rods and were known to bend them at 5800-6000rpms. You're putting some money in your engine, so go with 3/8" push rods and guide plates.
Manley 3/8" guide plates about $35
ARP 7/16" Studs under $30
Hardened 3/8" push rods $110-150.
What kind of machining? So how much are these conversion kits? I can still probably squeeze some more money out (I am being funded) I still need a new distributor plus pushrods/guideplates, roller rockers, and the conversion kit. Thanks George, you have been my biggest helper (Is that proper English?)
I have no experience with D3s, but the conversion kit is about $150. I don't know if the kit allows usage of guide plates or if guide plate thickness needs to be machined off the pedestals. Maybe somebody who is experienced with this conversion can jump in.
What exactly do these conversion kits do, I mean physically to the heads? Are they required for roller rockers? I am thinking of the compcams magnum roller rockers. Any advice about these?
I will chime in on this........The conversion kit will allow you to have a fully adjustable valve train. If you go to Cranes web site you can lean more about the coversion kit, it goes by Pn# 35655-16. I would still use a push rod length checker like George said before. I'm from the old school and would rather machine the pedestals and install 7/16 screwed in studs and guide plates. Yes they are required for roller rockers. Compcams magnum roller rockers are fine. Crane also has it's own version.
