short answer yes. there are 2 special tools for compressing the clutch pack in the drums to remove the snap rings. but you can either build a tool to do this or use c-clamps intstead to compress the clutch packs instead. if you buy the Hayes manual it shows the special tools and also how to use the c-clamps to do the same thing.
you don't really need to buy the tools if you are just doing one transmission.
thats the answer i was looken for. thank you. any advice on books or dvd's on this subject would be great. this will be my first tranny rebuild. poor boy cant afford $500 for a rebuild.
thank you sir. will order today. can anyone tell me realisticly how hard it is to rebuild a c6 without the specific tools? very mech inclined just never done it before and dont wana take a box of parts to a tranny guy if i get in over my head.
I made these years ago for compressing the springs. I have no idea how you could use C clamps to do this job. You will need a dial indicator and a magnetic base to check the gear train end play. The piston seals can give you some trouble. Get the right assembly paste & just goop them up good and take your time getting them in. I try to avoid using any feeler gages on them if possible. Always check your clutch pack clearances. Flush the output shaft out real good, there will be a lot of old fluid left in it. Other than that it's easy, just be careful with the valve body, be ready for the check ***** when you separate it. Keep everything in order and take pictures if you have a camera. Always do a air check before putting the valve body back in. Before putting the trans back in make sure you flush the lines and cooler real good. You don't want any left over crap going right back in your fresh rebuild.
