Changing ratios in an 80 "9 in." E150 diff
3.73 pencils in right. Ive built engines & trannys and more, sucessfully, over the years but never touched a rearend. Lowest bid so far is over $500, aint worth picking up 500 rpm or so.
I got a mitchells thats gives the general procedure for assembly/disassemby. I need a "for dummies" version.....I was THINKIN< MAYBE, doing it myself but it looks like a few special shim operations ae required, and special tools.
The junkyards around here got highly inflated ideas about what stuff is worth....
Should I forget it? The idea was better mpg, since at cruise (60) is be in the middle of the powerband, and pulling high vac, than now, about 1700 rpm.
Thus cheap figures in......payback in better mpg, but just a bit. maybe.
Its a 2bbl 4.9, headwork, & other mods.....
I had 3.50s and 31 inch tires with that POS trans and it was too tall so I feel your pain. 30 to 50 mph up a hill with a load is just a dream, ain't it?
Read through this, found up top under "Articles/Specs":

I paid the $450 when mine started to whine. "The 9" Experts" they said. Took them 5 tries to get it so the new one didn't whine. At least they stood behind their work, but what a pita.
You might have a hard time finding a 3:73.......but I bet you could find a 3:55 pretty easy if you look.
For $75 and a few hours of your time for searching, it might be worth it to just pull yours and stick the junkyard member in and see how she behaves.

Chris
