well i have a 02 with 156789miles on it and it develope a whistling sound during excileration.kinda sounds like boost leak but not sure so i took it to the dealership for a recall it had on it and the sound it was making.on my way down to the dealership, one of my "Y" pipes on the back of the turbo blew out. so i talk to the tech and told him the sound it was making before the pipe blew out. he told me that the pipe probly had a small crack which was causing the whistling sound. two days & 1167$ later and i pick up my truck and drove it down the road to find it was making the same whistling sound. so i head back to the shop and told them it was not fixed so they kept it for a few more day trying to figure it. well i got call from the service manager today saying that they over heated my tranny and blew it up by power braking it trying to find were the sound was coming from. i was woundering if anyone else had this problem or knows what it is before they blow another transmission or something else. please help!!!!!
Wow, powerbraking your truck trying to find a noise, sorry but why didn't they just throw it on the inspection machine emmisions rollers and listened. Glad to see they're not putting the screws to you with the tranny though, whew.
What the heck did they do for the 1100 bucks? A new turbo? Glad they are covering your tranny, be sure you hang on to the paper work and make sure they have something stating they tore it up, for future problems. Get your truck back home and as much of the $1100 that you can and get back with us. We'll find it for you and for nothing.
FWIW, a loud hissing sound is usually a boost leak on the INTAKE side. The exhaust side is normally a ticking type sound accompanied by exhaust smell (but not always). Depending on the sound, it could also be a damaged turbo wheel (either one). A chip or broken vane will make it whistle...
You could have a boost leak at a boot or a crack in a tube. Some here have made "boost adapters" using PVC pipe and air pressure. I would try this to see if you can pin down the location of the whistle. Be careful to use only 20-25 lbs. of air pressure so you don't blow something else. This way is sure a lot easier on the tranny....... This way won't identify a chipped wheel on the turbo so you will have to visually inspect to determine that.
well i got my truck back last night from them. i got them to give me an invoice stating what they did and gave me a 12/12 warrenty on the new torque converter and front tranny pump they put in. this weekend i will pull off the intake hoses and check the turbo for damage and if it looks good i will try the pvc pipe and pressure it up as farmdad discribe. I appriecate all the help guys and will let you know how it goes this weekend thanks.......
