4x4 locking hubs?
Here's a great question: I've got manual 4x4 . . . I have no indicators with words, arrows, or diagrams with which to know what direction I must turn my hub switch to engage the 4-wheel. One direction clearly "clicks" into place, while the opposite direction simply slides to a stop. So, first of all, which one is FREE, so the tires are spinning freely? Second, when it is locked, what happens in 2WD on the highway? Would that kill your gas mileage if they were in the locked position while in 2WD? I don't really know how it works. While we're at this topic, on my 6 speed . . . when I drop it into 4WD-high, there doesn't seem to be a really great location where it engages. In other words, when I put it in, it just slides there and can easily slide out, back into 2WD just from the vibration and rattling of the truck. In 4-low, no worries, clicks right in and stays in . . . but I can swing from 2WD thru 4H, and N, and end up in 4L without blinking an eye. Is that normal? I feel like it should kind of lock into place when in 4H. Thanks.

The hubs are locked when turned clockwise and dissengaged counterclockwise. When the hubs are locked and the transfer case is in 2hi, it is the same as having it in 4hi just that the truck is not trying to drive the front axle but everything is still turning. Yes having the hubs locked can cut down on your mpg. Not sure why you don't have a detent when you put in into 4hi.
