cost of making a basic flatbed

I tried searching through the forum already, but its soooo hard to weed through all of it. If its been asked and answered, I'd love to see the thread, but I cant find it.

I want to make a flatbed just to hold me over until we have the money for the real nice one from Highway Products. kevins telling me I cant do it for much less than 1k. I dont want to make it much longer or wider than the current bed, it needs to be sturdy enough to still do hay and hauling my trailer. i have a B&W turn over hitch right now so the bed would sit atop that. i'm thinking about making one even simpler that this one.

I want to make it all out of metal, and im just curious what people think it will cost me in materials. I dont know the cost of metal prices here, its probably ridiculously high, and i dont care to know because we would probably be buying the metal in Oregon. Thanks in advance :0)

The price of steel is high in Oregon as well.

If you keep an eye out on craigslist, nickel ads, or the equipment trader, you can probably find a complete take off flatbed for cheaper than you can build your own. Homemade or manufactured. I practically gave away a nice one a couple of years ago.

Lots of trailer sales also have flat beds for sale.

I can tell you I priced 1/8" diamond plate steel to reskin my flatbed last year, 400 dollars for enough to cover an 8' x 9' flatbed.

I was going to have the sides bent on a brake where the stake pockets get welded onto that was part of that steel price though.

Till you add in the back plate, frame steel and head board, you will be over 1000 in materials and still have a lot of cutting and welding.
Then wiring and lights on top of that.

The bed in the picture was shipping damaged on the back when I bought it 15 years ago, 700 dollars for the bed and lights.
Since I was making a dump bed out of it, I figured a few dents just made it look like it had already worked hard.
