Looking for advice. Just bought a clean 01 Limited 4X4 7.3. It is all original underneath and the front springs are absolutely shot. The passenger side bumpstop is actually destroyed and hanging there in pieces. On my 03 V10, I put in new V codes, F350 blocks and new Monroe shocks and like the added height and ride. However, the cost for this opens me up for potentially a different route. The Tuff Country 3" lift with shocks is a little over $600. It includes new front springs, 1 1/2 rear block and new shocks and track bar bracket. That option is open. But, I am also considering the 2" leveling kit from RiffRaff diesel. Anybody tried this? I am basically looking to refurbish the suspension to gain some height and keep it from bottoming out, yet keep it reasonable and avoid driveline vibes.
I would do whatever you feel comfortable with. I will add this though, whichever way you choose to skin the cat, at the very least, replacing the springs would be the common denominator for any action chosen.
My 02 7.3 4x4 Excursion goes in tomorrow evening for the V/B code swap with 3.5" rear blocks. I have had a Helwig rear stabalizer in the rear and Rancho 9000s for quite awhile. I will see how the shocks look when the new springs are installed and then decide what to do about them. The Ranchos have about 100K on them and I have had zero problems with them. I can't wait to see how the new setup works!
I also considered lift kits, but knew that I needed/wanted new springs with 155k on the clock.
The problem that I see with the 1.5" block for the rear is them wanting you to add it to the back block already making it a dual block. That is what would worry me. You would want to go single block back there. (unless I missed something.) You could get the larger 3.5" tapered block and modify you rear springs to get the same lift to match the front.
Yeah, i am not a fan of the stacked blocks. That was the big negative of the kit. All I want is to freshen up the suspension. I would consider the V codes again. But, after putting them on a V10 X, I am not so sure I would get the same lift with the added weight of the diesel. The V10 has settled down about half an inch since install a year ago. I would presume it would be more with the 7.3. That is why I would consider either a more substantial kit or just add a leveling kit and F350 blocks. I want to get about 39 - 40 " between the ground and middle of the front fender wells. The diesel is at 37 and the V10 is at 38 1/2.
Are the W's still a two leaf set? Are the X's two spring? Which one will allow a level look with a tapered F350 block? With the V's and F350 block, the rear is slightly higher than the front which I want. Or at least level. I went through the front caliper pins last night and laughed about the negative arch of the springs and broken bump stops.
An X code will give you approximately 1.25" more height compared to a V code. Maybe a tad less.
With standard B codes and the tapered block, you should still be slightly higher in the rear if you use the X codes, with a little more difference if you use the W's.
You can also do the modified B's on the rear to raise it higher, depending on how much you mod the B's.
