I'm curious to hear advice on what kind of preventive maintenance I can do to my '02 4x4 Excursion with a 7.3 liter diesel? I have 69,000 miles and tow a 9000lb travel trailer and want to be sure I'm not missing anything in the way of maintenance. I've done all the obvious things like change fluids regularly including oil transmission, transfer case and diffs. All filters have been changed too (air, oil, fuel). I don't have a diesel owner's manual so I'm coming to the experts on this forum. Is there anything I need to do with injectors, or anything else? I know these 7.3s are bullet proof and I want to keep it that way. Thanks.
Welcome. Sounds like you just about got it covered.. 69 k miles is excellent.. Have you changed coolant? How about power steering ATF flush.
There are a couple things to help with making it bullet proof.. The stancor glow plug relay Mod.. Intank fuel mods. Listed on our friends site Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Web Pages And the 50 cent mod.. Were we use a quarter in the under valve cover harness. The plug falls apart under the valve cover and a Quarter helps it hold in to place. And lastly. Have a spair CPS
Welcome to FTE.
What I recommend for you to do on your truck is to remove the valve covers.
Retorque the rocker arm pedastals to 20 foot pounds.
Retorque the injector hold down bolts to 120 inch pounds.
Take two quarters and cut them so that they will fit inside the clip that retains the inner plug to the valve cover gasket connection.
There are two different styles of plug now for the 99-03 engine.
The earlier style doesn't have the little tabs sticking up and you don't have to cut as much off the top of the quarter to enable it to fit in the slot.
The later ones have that little tab and the quarter won't sit all the way down into the slot.
These pictures were taken a couple of months ago when I replaced the engine in my truck and they are the late style valve cover gaskets.
See the little tabs sticking up?
The earlier ones don't have that and the quarter sits deeper.
Also get some fuel injection rated fuel line and a bunch of screw clamps.
Go under the truck and eliminate all the quick connects between the fuel tank outlet and the fuel pump inlet.
Those connections are great at keeping fuel in, but terrible at letting air into the fuel stream and contaminating the fuel supply with a bunch of air bubbles.
.
Hope this helps.
