lol....on the door sticker the early 99 was built on and before 12/7/98...99.5 started 12/8/98
with that said..many people up grade so to be sure you should open the hood..
in the pic bellow are both spiders..the orange one is a 99.5..the non painted one is the early 99...open the hood and ..with out climbing on the truck and leaning down into the motor (if its not your truck yet im sure the owner would thank you for not marking up his truck by climbing onto it..i would kill some one for jumping up on my truck) stand there and look strait at the spider where the driver side IC pipe hooks to the spider...(it is the top leg sticking out to the right in the pic bellow) if the right leg going down into the belly of the spider stays a full 3 inches like the orange one in the pic...you have a 99.5
if it gets smaller as it goes into the spider like the non painted one..then you have a early 99
you will also see in the pic..the top left leg on the 99.5 (orange) has a fitting in it..that is where the AIH is...(the one in the pic is now a boost port).you wont see one on the early bird...
I bought a 10/98 today. I saw the list, but doesn't appear to be advantageous to have the early bird. This my first diesel, so learning. Anyone want to list advantages & disadvantages? What should I look out for in changing/buying parts? More importantly, what parts should be upgraded (if have not been?) Sounds like larger rotors would be good? (it likely needs brakes immediately, from cursory inspection.) I mean, I have only had it a few hours now (and I'm pretty stoked)!! Big upgrade from my '80 F-250 351!
Congrats on the truck, and welcome to FTE.
I'm on my second e99 and love em.
The differences are minor when It comes to seat of the pants power.
I drive an 01 at work all the time, and I honestly cant tell the difference when pulling a load between it and mine.
I love they way my smaller turbo spools faster, and the whistle from the straight exhaust.
Stick around and you will learn alot of good info.
