I know its probably has been covered before but can someone tell me the differnce between early 99 superdutys and later 99 superdutys. And is there another place besides inside the door to find the build date?
What sort of info are you after? Gas or diesel motor? The change over date was December 8, 1998. Everything after that was a "1999.5" or "99 1/2". Production of the 1999 models started in February 1998. My first SuperDuty was a March 1998 model.
Some of the changes for the diesel 1999.5 model included a larger turbo, lower restriction intercooler, the removal of the catalytic converter, a revised air intake box that took air from the frontof the vehicle, and a different downpipe. 1999 diesel models have a small badge on the front fender that says "Powerstroke V8"; 1999.5 models have the diesel badge on the door above the body side molding. 1999.5 vehicles also had a standard passenger airbag, in 1999 it was a $300 option.
Here's the most comprehensive list I've come across, it relates to the PSD's mostly but some of the stuff applies to the gassers also. Credit for this list goes to strokin_early_99 over at ford-trucks.com.
Early 99 has a wicked wheel in it from the factory.
The early99 has 120cc(AB code) injectors and the late99-03 has 140cc(AD code) injectors.
The early99 has 2" intake runners. The late99-03 has 3" intake runners.
The early99 has a 15* swash plate HPOP. The late99-03 has a 17* swash plate HPOP.
The early99 has one glow plug relay. The late99-03 has one glow plug relay and one air intake heater relay side by side. Both relays are on the passenger side valve cover toward the front of the truck.
The early99 has a totally different air filter that is not inter changeable with the late99-03. But you can put the late99 air cleaner assembly in the early99 truck. The only two aftermarket air filters that work on the early99 are the AFE stage 2 and the AIS.
The early99 track rod has smaller mounting bolts than the late99-03.
The early99 has shallower rotors than the late99-03.
The early99 has shorter hub-bearings than the late99-03.
The early99 front axle U bolts are square where they go over the spring pack. The late99 U bolts are round.
The early99 has a different pitman arm than the late99-03.
The early99 does not have the AIH like the late99-03.
The early99 does not have the automatic transmission fluid cooler in the radiator.
The early99 has no indicator light showing that "cruise" is on. Late99-03 has a cruise light that will come on when you set the cruise control. The early99 truck has the light in the dash already. A newer PCM(Yes it will plug in and will run better too) must be used to make the cruise light illuminate. It is a green light on the right side edge, half way up.
thanks, mines the gaser motor and i was puting a lift on over the weekend when i came across having the wrong u bolts. But i can't find the date codes, the door stickers are missing. Is there anywhere else to find the date?
How about the headlights too,my truck has the old headlights. Will the late 99 lights just bolt in?
What do you mean "old headlights"? If you mean the old school sealed one piece headlights instead of the plastic shell with a replaceable bulb then no.
The build sticker should be on the cab, not the door. On my crew cab its between the two doors on the cab of the truck a few inches from the bottom.
take the vin and get a build sheet contact ford customer service they will hook you up someone on this fourm has the web abbress, use the search it works for me,I think it took about 2 weeks to get mine
And whys it so hard to get the right parts from auto stores?I bring the old parts, show the parts but they look at me like im stupid cause they can't find me the parts in there computer.

If you had the U bolts that are flat across the top then you deffenately have the early 99 model. They are cary overs from the older body style so you have to tell them they fit a 96 F250. Also the drop pittman will have to be for a 96 F250 or Bronco. I learned this the same way you are....
BTW the new model head lights (05+) are not bolt in, you have to modify. Do a search using my name, I've done it all to my early 99
Also no major changes on the gas engines between early and late 99s
Can you tell me more about the suspension changes on March 1st? I have the early 1999, and was wondering what the difference is. (I don't have a late 1999 to compare it to.)
So far i"ve found different u bolts and the bolts on the track bar are different.Maybe in the hub bearings and brakes too but i havn't found a complet list yet.And the local parts guys havn't been real helpfull.
