this is for a 2000 ranger. Almost lost the key this morning, it fell behind a brick column and had to break a couple of bricks to get it out. The Dealer said I would have to tow it to them and then they wanted $180 for a new one including programing.
Is there a way to disable the security system for the chip key, so I can just use a regular key?
second can I program a new key with the old key or do I have to have two keys to do that?

Reason: spelling
I only had one key and I got a mobile locksmith to come to my work, cut and program a second key for about HALF what the local dealer wanted to do the same thing. Now I should be able to have one cut and program it myself, but have not tried.

If we have two keys, we can program a third, foutrh, ect, up to six I believe it is.
Anyway the blank keys can be bought on the net for maybe $10 or so, most any place can grind the pattern from either of the one or two OEM keys & we can program the new key/s to our system using the proceedure in our owners manual.
OR, as rocketman64 said, we can have a locksmith do it, but it'll cost more, but still be WAY less than the Dealer wants.
If you don't have a manual, you can find the program proceedure in the "Tech Info" thread atop this forum & also find a download link for the owners manual down in the Misc. section in the fleet.ford.com link.
Edit: Some folks tape a programmed key out of site close to the ignition switch & use a plain ole $.99 Wally World key to start the engine, but this means they've defeated the security system & any thief can do the same. So it might affect your insurance rate, if you do that.
