well i guess n/m on the copy. forgot i had to take it in to the courthouse when i switched the title over from an iowa title. good thing the wife has a good memory all i know is, scrubbing the frame and trying to find the VIN numbers was a pain in azz. only one i found was on the passenger side right around the cab corner/door area.
sounds like he was old enough to know better. That just burns me up when people that are supposed to know, dont, and then jerk your chain about it. If its an older guy I likley know him....
They gave you a yellow copy of the MVE form as a receipt but if you are like the rest of us its long gone. Well no matter I guess, just thought I would educate him next time I saw him. Yea then only one you will find is between the wheel and the fire wall, the other is under the cab. I have found it easier to just take the tire off and wire brush the vin. Lucky you only have to do that MVE inspection one time. On behalf of the rest of us I'm sorry they sent you a idiot.....
I wanted to attach a picture of my door tags, but see my membership doesn't allow attachments, that's a bummer. On the bright side, I just got my avatar picture, now I just need to get 25 posts so I can have a signature. That door tag is a true mystery. It looks old as the hills, and it matches the VIN tag, but it's very, very different from other ones.
That's not what our Constitution states. California does all the time.
Our country is the United States of America not simply America.
The federal goverment needs to be right sized.
Sorry HP246 I mean no offense, I"ll get down off the box

Shawn,
I take no offense. I was commenting specifically on this situation. The requirement for the VIN was originally a federal mandate to fight rampant car theft. By accepting Federal funds, the States agree to comply with Federal regulations. Much of the regulation comes from the States accepting highway funding. Seat belts are a similar situation; seat belts were mandated by the Feds in the late 60s in cars. It wasn't until much later that the Feds caused nationwide enforcement by threatening to take away highway funding. In this case, the State of Kansas can't arbitrarily say the plate on the door is the public VIN. This was obviously a case of a uninformed officer.

I know the upper left is the VIN. The rest is a mystery. Thanks.
By any chance are these numbers from a metal plate attatched to the firewall? If so, that's called a "buck tag" and as far as I know they are indecipherable.
Thanks for thinking about this. Nope, it is a door tag on the driver's door. When you open the door, on the cab where the back of the door meets is the VIN tag, but it says it's a California replacement VIN tag. The R code in the VIN says it was made in California. The only thing I can think is, for some reason California replaced the VIN and door tag?
I did find the VIN stamped into the frame rail on the passenger's side a few inches behind the shock mount.
I'm guessing if I have a hard time registering it because of the "replacement" VIN (and door tag?), I can just point them to the VIN stamped into the frame and all will be well? I hope.
By the way, I'm new to working on Ford's. My wife got a hold of a '69 Mustang with a 302, and the VIN is stamped into the top of the block, just behind the intake. Is that also true on a truck with a 360? I hope so, and I'll look soon. I hope it's matching numbers as well. Thanks.
Nope, unfortunatley there are no numbers on the engines in dentsides that are meaningful. The same casting numbers on these engine blocks were used for years and cover several different displacements. Ford didn't stamp the truck engines with their VIN. If you ever see a truck advertised as numbers matching, the seller is full of s**t.
No problem, glad to help.
If you want to find out how your truck was originally equiped when it left the factory you can contact Kevin Marti at Marti Auto Works - Concourse Quality, Hobbyist Price and order a VIN report. This will give you all the important info on your truck. There is a fee and there are two or three different levels you can order.
You can contact Ford customer service and request the same thing for free but it will take a while to get. Years ago Marti found out Ford was going to destroy all of their old records and purchased them. So now when Ford needs the information they must contact Marti and get it from him.
