I just got a 1974 Ford F-250 4x4 High Boy, and there is no VIN on the dash. It is on the cab opposite the door when you open it. Is that right?
that sticker on the door jamb is your federal id tag. the actual vin plate is riveted on the drivers door around the door latch area. if i remember right they didnt start to put the vin plates in the dash till 80 on the newer body style.
Actually, the plate on the door is called the warranty plate. When it comes to VIN and registration/title issues this plate has NO legal standing. It does have the VIN number on it but doors are too easy to change (this comes up on the Forum all the time).
The actual LEGAL VIN is stamped on the frame in two places, one visible (top right frame rail about inline with the alternator, and one hidden (again top right frame rail about six inches behind the front cab mount.
Dash mounted VINs weren't required untill the 80's. No dentside has a dash mounted VIN.

not where i live it isnt. if the plate is missing and all you have is the federal sticker, you have to look on the frame for the VIN to get a title. i just went through this on my 76 3/4 ton lol. might be different down there though. state trooper said i was lucky i found the vin on the frame the day he inspected or he could have impounded the truck since it was missing the plate on the door. stupid kansas laws.
Actually, Mike is correct. The State trooper is wrong. The VIN on these trucks is on the frame. If the trooper has heartburn over this tell him he need to contact the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) and they can provide him with the correct information. Do a search, we explained this numerous times. Kansas Law cannot supersede Federal Law.
Wow! That is a little confusing!
Those numbers aren't making much sense.
Click on the .pdf file and you will see what a warranty plate normally looks like and also how it is laid out.
I can identify the VIN and also the wheelbase (133") but the other codes are, as I said, confusing.
I'll see if I can make some sense of it and let you know.
F26=F250 4WD pickup
Y=360 CID 2bbl V8 engine
R=San Jose assy plant
T44772=sequential serial number
This decodes the VIN number. The rest of the codes I'm still scratching my head over.
Hey 82 ford, you say a KS Trooper threatened to sieze your truck if you couldnt find the frame vin ??? do you remember his name?....they just keep employing these STUPID kids....Its not stupid laws, its these over educated geeks that dont understand the law....I really would be interested in knowing who that was, if you dont want to post it send me an email radar457@havilandtelco.com
i dont remember what his name was. he was about 5-7 yrs older than me maybe and im 30. he was really blunt about it and said it with ease like he knew what he was talking about. i'll have to look through the pile of papers tomorrow to find the copy of the inspection.
