Ok, I pulled my 3500lb trailer with my Ex on it home from an auction about 100 miles away using a 2002 F350 crew cab, dually, 4x4 6speed PSD that I bought at the aution. It pulled so nice and easy even with a way loose steering box that I am now tempted to buy a donor F350 4x4 dually and swap out the drivetrain into my Ex.... Just wandering if anyone has done this. I figure I can go all out and swap the a 6 speed stick tranny, floor shifted Transfer case with Neutral and front and rear axles and wheels of course. Maybe the springs too.. Just gotta measure if the duals will clear the frame rail... I am sure someone makes the replacement dual fenders for the rear I could adapt to the setup
Oh man, I had the same idea the other day, I shared it with my brother and he called me a bad name, but I think that would be sick looking Excursion with a dually rear end. I think the swap wouldn't be too difficult assuming both trucks share a relatively similar frame, right?

I think there are 2 versions of the dually frame, one is standard width and the other like my cab and chassis is narrowed at the rear after the cab section. If the wife gets home before dark I will go measure both trucks..
I am not really concerned about looks, I am looking at the improved towing and handling.... The Ex is nice for traveling due to extra space inside thus my only reason for not just going with an F350 dually...
Last summer I met a guy from Long Island N.Y. who was driving a dually Excursion. He used the suspension from a 450 truck. He told me he contacted a limo conversion company and they put him in touch with the manufacturer of the rear dually fender. His rear fenders extended onto the Ex's rear passenger doors. His reason for upgrading the truck, cost him about 20k, was to increase his tow rating. He had a family of 7 and was towing a 12,000lb TT.
Just made a quick measurement and the outer U-Bolts on the Ex rear axle are about 3" wider overall than on the F350. so that would be about an 1"1/2 closer to the spring on each side. I could always add a 1" spacer on the axles if tires rubbed on the spring though it looks like they would clear without a problem
I'm not going to butcher my 05', however I am going to put an X body on a F-450 V-10,6sp, 4X4, chassis. I already bought a complete straight 04' chassis with the above specs from the insurance co. It only has 16,000 miles on it. I figure later I will find a blown X to set on the chassis. I'm not too crazy about the offerings of dually fenders though, they look kinda overpowering for the X. I saw some a while back made in the UK that were in an offroad forum. I think the company has now quit making them. I may have to have some custom made.
