yesterday i was adding a few leafs to the front of my f350. just working away and the jackstand on the side of the truck i was working on snapped and the truck almost fell on me!. ive never heard of a 6 ton stand break like this.
be careful out there guys!

the 2 jackstands behind it were put there so the truck wouldnt fall to the ground after the one broke..

WOW! That is scary. I've had floor jacks lose pressure and fall or tip over but I've never seen a jackstand break like that. I always figured the legs to fold first. I usualy put crib blocks under the frame or axles if I have room just in case something like that happens.
Glad nobody got hurt!

WOW. How much of that extention piece was still in the lower half of the stand?
I've seen a similar situation happen, but they had the stand extended as high as it would go, and the vehicle wasn't on level ground.
I guess I'm not really paranoid after all, cause I usually put blocks or at least a tire/wheel under the frame, just in case......

Had that happen to me once, NEVER fully extend the stand. I use heavy blocks of 8x8 wood under the stands when they are not high enough(probly still not safe too). Or use bigger stands.
it was up only half of the full length.. if you look in the bottom of the stand you can still see a bit poking through.
i was really lucky, i only broke my thumb and fractured a few bones in my hand when it fell
i'm going to get a few rail road ties and cut em up for a safety measure now.

last week at work i had a similar experience. i work at a small manufaturing shop, and we build manure spreaders. i was laying under one on a creeper tightening bolts, and at this point it didnt have axles or tires on it. before we put them on, the frame it supported by 3 pieces of 24" I beam. another worker was up top pulling hydraulic hoses through, using a forklift (cause thats the S & R way...lol) as he was pulling, it lifted the frame off the rear beams, knocking one over and the spreader swung down and hit the floor.
luckily i was closer to the front and it stopped at least a foot over my head, but needless to say, i was a little too close to needing some new shorts.
sorry to hijack the thread, just thought id share
