As I got ready to reinstall the upper intake plenum on my recently purchased '90 F150 5.0, I was dreading the operation. The last gasket installed had been knocked askew when it was done last, with half of it apparently sucked into the motor. I was pretty sure that I would repeat that feat as well - I couldn't see myself getting the upper half lined up and in place on the lower manifold without making the gasket slip out of position. I finally came up with an idea - went to the local True Value and bought a section of 5/16-18 coarse threaded rod and cut off three 2-inch sections. Took the three sections and threaded them finger-tight into the bolt holes in the manifold base, and I had positive locator pegs to guide the upper plenum into place via the mounting bolt ears. Worked like a charm - got the upper plenum perfectly positioned on the first try. After that, just unscrew the threaded rods out and thread in the bolts and tighten. It worked for me!!!
Using studs as a mounting aid is useful for other things like valve covers, water pumps, headers, exhaust manifolds, etc........beats having to do it over after finding out the gasket moved during installation.
