74 f250 4x4 power steering problems/questions

Just recently purchased the truck and have been doing a little work on it. The truck has factory power steering but wasnt working when I got it mainly because there was no fluid. Added fluid and the pump mad grotesque noises fluid started basically pouring out of some sort of shock thing on the front axle???? Almost like a steering stabilizer but had power steering lines running to it. Already priced the pump ($40) but have no clue what the shock thing is or where to get it. Can anyone help me with this?????????

You have the power-assist steering setup, the parts are available but are VERY expensive, if the system's totally thrashed you're better off just doing the 78/79 integral power steering upgrade, it seems at the very minimum you need new seals for the hydraulic cylinder ($40) you need to cut the cylinder open to install the seals then weld it back together.

1974 F250 4WD's used two totally different types of Power Assist P/S, GARRISON & BENDIX. The parts do not interchange!

All 1973 F250 4WD's, 1974 F250 4WD's before serial number T80,001 used GARRISON P/S.

1974 F250 4WD's from serial number T80,001, 1975/77 F250 4WD's (High Boy's) used BENDIX P/S.

The serial number is the last six digits of the VIN.

Ford sold P/S seal kits for both the control valve and the ram cylinder, also the bushing kit to mount the ram to the frame.

These kits are obsolete, but a few can still be found at Ford Dealers, obsolete parts vendors.

The last time I looked, there were several new ram cylinders available. These are also obsolete.

Not necessarily, it depends....

Since the parts are obsolete, the Ford Dealers can no longer return them to Ford...so are STUCK with them.

Usually Ford Dealers sell obsolete parts at...or below the last MSRP, or at their original net cost. One Ford Dealer in AZ has 1000's of obsolete parts, sells them below their original net cost.

Obsolete parts vendors are in the business of selling obsolete parts, so the price is usually much higher than the last MSRP.

A member needed a Race Track moulding for the right lower quarter panel (bed side) that had the accessory tool box. I found exactly one...at dealer in KS.

He bought (stole!) it for $38.40, the original MSRP.

You can get one from LMC truck parts. It is like $225.00 or so plus a core charge. Mine works great from them.
