Just bought a 94 Ex. 4.0 4x4 w/ a4ld. Previous owner said it quit pulling one day on way to work. He towed it home and added trans fluid. He cranked it up and found out it was blowing trans fluid out of exhaust. He put in a modulator valve, changed the fluid and filter, but it still won't pull. It's not blowing fluid out of the exhaust now. If you rev it up to 2500, it will pull just slightly in all gears. I hooked up a pressure tester and came up with these #'s:
IDLE - Park-85, Rev-115, Neut through 1st- 85
1200 - Park-85, Rev-115, Neut-85, OD through 1st-125-130
Performed test w/ vehicle on jack stands, brake applied. Anybody have ideas where to go from here? I am willing to try a rebuild if that's called for, but looking for more ways to diagnose the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I had a C3 modulator on a A4LD one time and it didnt move. This modulator was in the wrong box and I just slapped it on with out a second look.
A C3 modulator looks like a A4LD modulator except that the pin sits deeper into the one from a A4LD. If you use a C3 in place of A4LD one it will bind the valve and cause the converter not to fill.
A transmission cant move if the converter has no fluid in it.
Converter and lube pressure is different from line pressure.
It would be good to know if the transmission worked after he put fluid in it and before he replaced the modulator. The transmission just simply could be toast after driving it out of fluid.
Thanks for the reply JK. I don't think he tried to drive it after putting fluid back in it. He cranked it and saw fluid was coming out the exhaust so he changed the modulator. I have the old modulator, so I guess I am wondering how to tell if the new one is the right one. I took the new one off to make sure the pin was installed, and it was. I've got someone who wants to buy it, so I want to make sure I fix it right. Don't believe in covering up a problem just to get rid of it. Funny, I could rebuild almost anything on the darn thing, but I don't know "Jack" about auto transmissions!
Well, I took off the pan and filter and didn't find anything much. A little gunk on the magnet in the pan, and just a little "glitter" in the bottom of the pan with some thick fluid/gunk. I'm pretty much at a dead end. I guess maybe the next step is to pull the tranny. Don't want to do that if not necessary, but don't know what to do next. Anybody have any ideas how to proceed now?
Thanks
The trans has been overheated and allowed to slip. A couple minutes on low fluid can equal as much as 50,000 miles or more of normal wear. It overheats everything inside.
At your stage, you have one choice, pull the trans, dismantle it, and access the damage.

Did you put the old one back on just to see if it would move?
