My friend has a extremely nice rust free '74 F100 with a 360/C-6. He recently called me and asked me a few questions.
1. Can C1AE heads fit his stock intake?
2. What compression would this make with either flat top pistons or dished pistons?
3. He wants to make at least 400 hp with this 360. What am I gonna tell him other than the fact that it is about impossible to get that much power out of a 360 with 100 percent internals? He has the 390 crank and rods, but doesn't want to use them.
4. Someone told him the stock rods could only handle 10.1 compression. That's a bunch of BS. How much hp can they take stock? He wanted to use I beam rods. I talked him out of this, fortunately.
5. How much hp can the stock crank take without breaking?
He wants to get some answers ASAP so he can get this motor done in time for summer cruising. Thank you for your time.
2. These heads have a 71-74 cc combustion chamber. As best as I can find, the D2TEs (which is probably what's on it) have the same size chamber and valves, so no compression advantage. Heads
3. He can make that much power if he can somehow make it spin enough rpms.... Much easier to use the 390 parts.
4. Stock rods are the longer rods, and it won't matter because unless he has some custom pistons made, he won't find pistons that will make 10:1 in a 360.
5. Stock iron 3.5 stroke FE cranks are good for more than he'll ever get out of a 360....
The C1AE heads will not have hardened seats either.
If he wants 400 hp, it can be had. Using the 390 stuff plus other select parts. Examples:
If his 360 has that mirror image casting number "105" below the driver's side deck of the block, and since he has to get custom pistons anyway to reach compression goals and the block needs to be bored anyway, have the block sonic checked to see if it will bore out to a 428. Order the custom pistons for a 406 and for the desired compression, use the 390 rods and crank, and your friend will have very good foundation to build around. If the stock intake is a 2bbl, junk it and find a good 4bbl or have some fun with a 6bbl if he has the dough. "406" sound more mocho than a "360"
