360 to 410 with a 428 crank?
Im about to tear my engine down and rebuilt it. I was told by a older man that when doing so i should replace the crank with a SCAT 428 crank and with the factory pistons and rod i will get a 410 and about 10.5 compression. He said to use a SCAT crank because they are internally ballanced and i would not need a 428 flywheel/flexplate. He also said that boring it .030 would get me a 416 and .060 would get me a 422. I used a CI calculator and it checks out to be true. Once agine with stock rods and piston length. What do you think?
428 crank=3.980

I think you should visit Survival Motorsports Home Page and review their online info on the FE. Barry Rabotnick is an FE guru and has the low-down on different combinations.
Based on what the older dude said, it does sound accurate but verifying his info needs confirmation through an expert resource. Heck, why not just go with a 445 stroker????

Thank you so much for that to link Survival. I am going to rebuild my engine with there Prison beak 445 - 390 stroker kit and top it off with a set of edelbrock 72cc heads. Im going to do to it all in my garage to cut down on rebuild cost.
But just for curiosity was the old man right about the 428 crank and getting a 410?

You're welcome. Ya might wanna read this CarCraft article too: Ford 390 FE - Car Craft Magazine
And another: 433ci Ford FE Engine - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine
And another source for parts/tech: Ford Engine Kit - Ford FE Stroker Kit, 390 FE, 428 FE, 416, 428, 431, 442, 445, 455, Stroker
Yes the old guy was right. Compare the columns for the 390 and the 410 on this page: Ford "FE" Engine Specifications

Thanks for links guys.
I read the car craft article and its what sold me on the 455 stroker kit.
The popular hot rodding article is crazy. That is a insane motor build. Not what im looking for but still very cool.
Thanks for the link to Coast High Performance as well. Awsome prices.
And going off your 4th link the 410 build would be better and cheaper than a full 390 conversion. It shows that it makes most of its power in the lower rpms wich it great for a truck. And it appears to makes a little more power than the 390.
Thanks montana_highboy for the link as well.

Are the 360/390 cranks flywheel, internal, or front balanced?
Im wheighing my options between 445,410,or 390 rebuild. Im trying to stay at 1500 for parts and im not really wanting to bore out my engine. So i think 445 might be a little to much at this time. Im really confused about the 390 conversions. Iv read so much about them that everything is starting to run together. To make a 390 out of a factory 360 all i need is a 390 crank and rods correct? And all i need to make a 410 out of a factory 360 is a 428 crank and find someone to internally balance it correct?

I recently did my 360/390 conversion. with .060 bore = 402 ci. I bought a reground 390 crank (.010), reconditioned 390/428 rods and new 390 sealed power pistons (.060 and moly rings) 1970 Ford F100 FE 390 Rebuild (2nd run) - YouTube

Thank you for that information. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the 410. I found a 428 crank yesterday for 200 bucks+shipping. There is a machine shop down here that will internally balance it for around 100 bucks. I plan to use eagle rods and 9.5to1 compresion pistons so I can still use the cheap stuff. Thanks everyone for your help. I have a freind of mine that owns a speed shop with a dyno. I will be sure to post up my results after my build with a few videos. Now I need to go pull my motor and get to work.

Do these pistons look to be direct replacement?

Iv decided to turn the motor over to a local engine rebuild guy. Im going to pull the engine and drop it off with him. He has a vast knowledge of ford engines and FE engines. For 2,300 bucks im going to get a nice 416. Basically its a 390 punched 30 over with a 428 crank. He talked me into. He said that since the motor was original that he recomends the .030 over bore to get new piston walls. Im then going to add edelbrock heads and very very mild RV cam. Im getting the heads for cheap and the engine rebuilder is going to spec a cam that will work good for my needs. So thats where that stands. Im not building a drag motor. Im building a truck motor. Sure it wont have 500 horse power but i bet it will pull a house down when im done. It will be moderate compression so i can still use the cheap stuff.

Cool! I just redone my engine which is the number matching one! It was rebuild to stock specs, but I wish that I had done a little more to it , but O well! The guys that did it are members of the Pony Express Racing Club, U might have saw them when Pinks All Out, a couple of Years ago in Atlanta and Gainsville! One show had a guy with Funny looking Hat, with the skunk thing going on! Well, get some pics posted when U can!
