Other than the visual view of the exhaust system will deleting the cat and dpf still allow the truck to pass the emissions test? If so is it possible to split the cat and dpf, gut them, weld it back together and the carcass back on or would this attempt get caught and end a person in a bad place? Thanks for your thoughts.
The cat can be busted up and dumped out. It is ceramic. Dependant on the state depends on if it would pass. I'd say having it visually there would help. Most emissions tests so far seem pretty easy. They will get tougher. I wouldn't even thing about destroying a dpf to get around emissions. They are pretty pricey and ford will want it on to do any diagnostic work.
What state do you live in, and how close do they examine the vehicle? You can get away with a lot in some areas (like no emissions testing or inspection where I live in NE Wisconsin) but in California every part that isn't stock better have a CARB certification or you're screwed.
Live in Hamilton County in TN. They examine the uinderside with a mirror and then either plug into your system or use a sniffer to test the emissions. However, at this time anything above a gvwr of 10,500 #'s is exempt so a 350 wouldn't be subject to emissions testing. There is a push to raise the weight limit to 12,500 #'s. The new weight passing will depend, I suppose, on how many folks own a 350's that are making the decision.
You have to be willing to pay if you get caught and not just fines either. If you gut the DPF and do fail the emissions inspection you will have to buy a new DPF at around $2k. Not to mention you will need a tuner to reflash the pcm to get rid of the regen cycle. Honestly if your state performs the sniffer test on diesels, that would concern me. Then there is dealing with the dealer and Ford if any warrenty work would have to be done on the truck with a gutted DPF.
As far as the GVWR for the F-350 that varies with vehicle configuration. It ranges from 10klbs-13klbs max GVWR.
I second that, your best bet is to leave it all alone. I don't know what kind of truck you have or are referring to, but if it isn't broke, don't "fix" it. I am assuming you have a diesel, which I will let you know right now, if you have to restore things that will cost you very dearly. These components on the 2007 and newer are not cheap, and they are dealer only.
These answers are what I expected. Does adding a Spartan help with the fuel mileage without going the cat/dpf delete process? Thanks for everyones input and help.
Your best bet is to post down in the 6.4l section to get more and better info. From what I gather the best mpg increase you are going to see is running Spartens higher HP offroad tunes and getting rid of the dpf.
A few months ago someone posted that he gutted the dpf and his truck would not run right so he had to py $2500.00 for a mew one.
That is because the computer goes into limp mode with out the dpf. You have to have a tuner if you ditch the dpf. The best work around is to get a 4" tbe and a tuner. Hope and pray you don't get caught by either the law or ford. That is the only way you are going to realistically improve the mpgs. Its a gamble. Decide if the potential fine and potential loss of warranty will be more benificial than a few mpg when driving.
i just installed a 4" afe turbo back and edge evolution cts with the dpf delete on my 08 it has never run so great as well as the 5-6 mpg improvment but today i had to do a emission test and it failed like i knew it would so my advice is to definatly put the kit on but when you remove your stock exhaust you cut it just after the dpf and save the 2 pieces as well you get a bolt up after market kit (no welding) this makes it easy to switch out in your garage or driveway in a matter of a couple hours to go pass the dreaded emissions test......as for the emission test i failed the opacity test at 41.6% the allowable is 30% where i am from......this is the amount of carbon in your exhaust (black smoke) there is a company called monster diesel which makes a diesel fuel additive that apparently will eliminate all black smoke from your exhaust....i am going to give this a try and retest hopefully it works......i will repost after i try this and retest and let you guys know
