look i have a towing company with a 95 psd and i had a pretty catastrophic problem the hpop went out and sent small metal particles through the ipr then to the injectors and hung one of my injectors wide open dumping raw fuel into the number 5 cylinder well i thought i had not torqued down an injector properly as it was fuel knocking and i tried to drive it another 15 miles to the shop as it was smoking to be damned well i didnt make it needless to say i bought a hpop an ipr valve an injector and a number 5 piston and rings. and this was at 202000 miles i now have 308000 on the same motor knock on wood but no problems since not even smoke at startup besides a tranny but this 450 gets worked hard everyday sometime pulling loads of 15 to 20k at times so i would say put a piston in and forget it but knowing what i know now ford did this work for me and all said and done parts and labor was $5000 and a reman engine from ford here in nashville is $7000 so unless your gonna do it yourself you might as well get a reman with the 100000 warranty.. but either way just wanted to assure you that if you want to replace just a piston you will be fine ford even warrantied all the work they did for me for 12000 miles if they didnt think the engine would hold up they wouldnt have done it hope this helps
Thanks for all the help I found a guy out here that buys and sells wrecked powerstrokes. He told me he probably get a used motor out of a wrecked truck with about 150000 miles on it and install it for $3100. I then figured $500 for stage 1s and couple hundred for a exhaust system. So now I have to wait for my tax return to hurry up and get here so I can send my injectors off and send my truck in.
To anyone out there with a burned Piston.
You can NOT just simply drop the pan, pull a head, hone the cylinder and install a new Piston. Little bits of aluminum Piston get mixed in with the oil, which means ALL of the bearings are shot, ALL of the injectors need to be overhauled, the turbo bearings are damaged, HPOP needs cleaned/replaced, etc.
The motor needs a COMPLETE tear down and overhaul when this happens.
I know first hand of this (and any reputable engine builder will tell you the same thing) from working with a customer suffering from rectal cranium inversion, and if you don't do anything about it you'll regret it later!
