hole in #5 piston

So the last two weeks my truck has had a ticking/knocking sound. I did a compresion test and a leak down and found out that #5 piston is not holding any compression or air.
So now I am going to start looking for a new motor or reman motor. My question for you guys is if you had the chance to do a budget build and build a good strong reliable truck. I was thinking satge 1 sticks, adrenaline hpop, d66 turbo and a ts/dp chip. Am i on the right track or are there any recommendations. How much can I get a new motor and how much would a buildup with all the mods cost. I just want a good strong reliable towing machine.
As always thanks for all the help.

I've heard that reman engines are over $5K? Although I've never looked, you should be able to find a donor truck for less than that.

Modding up a donor engine will probably cost more than you think, especially if you add in your labor.

I'd ditch the idea of putting a PSD back in there and put a Cummins in it. Those engines are a dime a dozen.

Just throwin that out there...

I'd just replace the piston if it were mine.
You'll have to pull the motor, pull the oil pan and head but it's a lot cheaper than another engine. Just fix it. Maybe even pull both heads while it's out for new head gaskets and inspection. It's a diesel, you won't even notice one new piston in it other than it won't have a hole in it anymore.

Is that where they normally get holes at?

A hole in the piston is a lot more common than valves burned so bad that it won't hold compression on a diesel. I've seen bent valves before but it's unlikely on yours since it's mostly stock still and you didn't mention dropping anything in the intake.
Really, I'd just pull it and take the head off for a look. This is an easy job to do if you have the tools.

My problem with rebuilding the motor is that there is no one out here that can machine the motor. The guy that has been helping me said he could get a 7.3 with a 2 year warranty for 2-3k. I also thought about doing a cummins swap but it looked like it would cost twice as much plus I dont know anything about cummins and getting all the computer stuff to work together.

There isn't anything to machine if your cylinder isn't scored up. Just home it and put the new piston in. It would be nice to rebuild it but you don't have to if it's only one piston and you're on a budget.

Also my worry of just replacing the one piston is that the motor already has about 250000 miles on it so what else should i change and replace to avoid extra problems down the road.

Sounds cheap to me, but never looked hard. Old busses are a cheap place to find a used engine. Seen some 95-2000's (depending on mileage and body shape) sell for $500-$2500
I've been trying to sell my 95 IH for about 3 yrs now and can't get a offer higher than scrap. I'm just gonna keep it around IF i ever need a spare, then sell the rest of the bus for scrap.

If you had good and even compression readings on all the other cylinders then I wouldn't worry about it. I've done a lot of pistons, out in the field even, without doing a complete overhaul.
I would just change the gaskets that you take off and all the o rings on the turbo, rear oil galley plugs and any other one you see that is a booger to get to in the truck.

Kwikordead who frequents the 99-03 7.3 forum recently got a reman from either Clay or Partsguyed. I don't remember which. I don't know the price either. I'll see if I can find the thread.
