Tonight on the drive home the battery light came on and stayed on. I stopped at AutoZ, and had the batteries tested both where at 80% charge and amps were fine. Tested the alternator and the voltage was "low". So, needs new alternator no big deal. $190 bucks for a new. Um ok ouch.
I'll do it over the weekend, and car pool the rest of the week. Well the 7 miles from Tomball to Magnolia, the light shuts off. WTF.
So searching the forum here 1st I'm gonna check the wires for wear. Any other thoughts before I shell $200 bucks. Timing could not be worst since I need tires badly on the family hauler.
Original Alternator, 180,000 miles on the 2002 truck.
background
I have had a couple of times had the truck acted like the batteries were dead, and hard to start cranked like dead batteries, after the truck had sat undriven for a month to 6 weeks. But it was extremely cold days and I figured I should have let the glow plugs warm up longer, doing that it starts everytime.
I just replaced the stock alt on my 02 as well, about a month ago.
it took a craopla and I went and bought a new 6G(large case) from a shop in N IL
I paid $250 for a 250 amp unit, the stock alt puts out 110 amp at idle
Look for some local shop that sells new/rebuilt high mp units or try DB electrical
Thanks for the responses. I'm gonna go by the local Napa, they have been more helpful with diesel items. Anyone in the Tomball area suggest someone to do the rebuild. Northwest Houston or south of downtown? I cover some distance in houston evreyday so I don't mine driving to get it done right. Probaly gonna wait till next Pay day to fix this.
Thanks Obama
