i see plenty of these posts decoding a particular sticker. but where is this info coming from? id like to be able to look it up myself.

I use the factory parts manuals, there are two volumes, text and illustrations. All the info is in the text volume, including how to read the VIN/warranty tags.
These are available on CD. I bought mine from a seller on ebay.
