Fuel Cap Issue

Hey everyone. I have a 1979 F-150 4x4 short bed with an auxillary gas tank. There is a locking style cap on it. Everyday gas leaks from this cap. I can not find a replacement cap. Been to Autozone, NAPA, Discount Auto- there parts do not fit. Any ideas on where to find this part?

Thanks,
Shawnyboy

It sounds like the same situation I have with my '77... I have to run vented non-emissions style caps or the gas will pressurize and start spraying out of the filler, around the cap... The cap on the cab tank doesn't seal well so that's not much of an issue, but the aft tank is really bad for that...

To add to the issue, I have to run "deep cam" caps as standard ones don't fit - they won't clip down... Most stores don't carry these in-stock - they have to be ordered in...

I don't have vented tanks and my truck never had a charcoal canister for venting gas fumes hence the need for vented caps... If your truck has a charcoal canister, I would check to see if your tank vents aren't plugged and causing the gas to pressurize...

Furyus1,

I am in the same boat as you are. I am switching my fuel system from ESS style with the canister to non-ESS venting out of the cap. I can't seem to find a deep well venting cap. All the venting caps I find are short well caps. Can you refer me anywhere that sells them?

Or just drill a hole in a sealed one. Viola! Vented.

Or buy a grommet and vent valve from LMC, drill a 1.25" hole in the top of the tank, insert both, and run a 1/4" vacuum line up to the air cleaner.

That way, if you roll over, you don't leak gas all over the place, but you still get the benefit of having the vent :-P
