welding question

Is there any reason you can't weld a piece of galvanized angle iron to a regular piece of steel with a stick welder. Using a standard 6013 1/8 x14" rod.

It'll stink a little, but no. Should be just fine. What is this for?

Don't breath the smoke, it's pretty toxic. That rod should be ok as-is, but you'll get a lot less spatter and a much better weld if you sand the zinc off first.

Grinding the Zinc from where you want to weld will help greatly, and keep your head away from the fumes. Breathing the fumes will give you a nasty headache. Been there, done that................

All the above............DO NOT inhale the fumes from the galv.!

I did know a guy who used a respirator under his helmet because he was in a massive hurry and had no time to grind away the galv.

Does the zinc have any affect on strength of the weld? I know there is the inhalation hazard.

It has the potential to contaminate the weld, although in reality most of it will burn off the surface first........but why chance it....grind it off as it will only take a half a second as its a very thin layer...
