The button is commanding the tranny, but no indication via the light. This is the second shifter (first one shorted out) and for some reason I thought the light was a LED. Hopefully it's a bulb. Anyone know?
The switch and light come as an integrated unit that plugs into the end of the shifter. Having said that, it is most likely a broken wire at the base of the shifter where it pivots on the steering column. They break a lot. Read here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ml#post7065814
If the button and light are an integrated unit, let me know if the dead light is really your problem. I think I saved the shift lever with bad wires from my wife's truck. If I did, I've still got the end piece with the button and light. I could send you the switch if that's your real problem.

Chris, thank you for the kind offer, I do have a problem, but as usual... not as simple as a light. So I hook up the AE, and read the Tranny position sensor. It reads (P,R,N,[D,OD],2,1) While in Drive, every time I cycled the switch on the shifter, the AE reacted appropriately showing either D or OD, AND the light illuminated. Put it in Park, NO light! Wiggled and jiggled the lever with no sporadic response. Seemed quite systematic. Didn't really focus much on this, spent more time on the P1298 IDM issue, but will be visiting this at a later time.
What gets me is that it works as designed, every time as far as I can tell, but the light isn't indicating it. I don't understand how that's possible, unless there are 3 leads on this switch one to tell the PCM, one to receive the "light" signal.
Well confirmed today that there indeed is a short... While the function of the switch is unimpeded, the light operates intermittently. Found the light worked in Park, then I tilted the wheel down to where I have it while driving... the light went out. Tilted the column back up... light came back on. SO, time for a new shifter.

Those wires tend to rub as they go over the steering column. You may just get away with some electrical tape.
