I'm running 285 Good Year Wrangler Silent Armours on my 02 EX, have a little over 40,000 miles on em and have an average of 11/32 tread still to go. I rotate every 5000 miles and absolutely love em in the Minnesota winters.
i've run studs for years and alot of time on dry pavment in the fall and late spring before they are removed for summer wheels/tires...the only worry on dry pavment with studs is wearing them down..this fall i put mine on in september and ended up going alittle over a month on dry ground before the snow stuck to the roads. majority of the people up here run them all winter w/no issues.
blizzaks are amazing, we have them on our 300C AWD and '04 F-150 4x4 since our roads here where the OP is from are mainly ice covered since we dont use salt and little gravel from october/march they are a great choice as they are amazing on ice.
the cooper discoverer M+S has many sipes like the blizzak and is soft but not as soft as the blizzak. but the other thing is its studdable and offers great traction i own a few sets on my other trucks for winter.
hey do you think you could give me a ride with your blizzaks so i can see how they work, and then with the m/s so i can see what one i like better? ya our anchorage roads are just like driving on hard packed snow/ ice most the time, the sanding does help some, but ive slid thru many stop signs off the main roads with my bfg ko's
yeah no problem, i have the M+S's on my dads explorer this season since my explorer is parked for its V8 swap. the blizzaks are on my grandparents car and truck but i can get them anytime.
we better hurry though the snow/ice is melting fast! lol

ya we might have to wait for a bug ice up or next winter! im leaning towards just the standard studded, i have a set but i cant remember if they are 16 or 16.5's once i go check then i will need to look for that size rims.
the bfgs i have on my truck this season are "trac edge's" but they changed the name on them to the bfg commercial t/a i think it is but i have been pretty happy with them. i bought them used with about 80% from a guy in eagle river in '08 and had them double studded at alaska tire..i then used them on my f-250 for the 08-09 then this season put them on my excursion and i like them i just know theres alittle better so thats what i want plus i would like to put these back on my f-250. you can get the BFGs at costco and they are priced pretty well.
Anyone have any experience with the Firestone Destination A/T's in snow? They are ranked #1 on Tirerack in the On-/Off-Road All-Terrain category. The BFG KO's are ranked #10, but a colleague of mine swears by them. I don't like the idea of sliding through stop signs...
well they are not a dedicated snow tire so they wont act like one. but i have had the chance to drive a few pickups with these tires and they do ok. i would say just as well as the 70% BFG ATs on my bronco.
In my experience, the two best winter tires (not dedicated snows) are the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour and BF Goodrich All-Terrain KOs. I give the edge to the GY as I have had better experience with longevity with them. Just my experiences. Good luck!
Well, what's got me wondering down the 'not a dedicated snow tire' conversation is that only the BFG's have the Mountain and Snowflake symbol on the sidewall - a snow tire rating, but found here on an A/T tire.
Of course, anything is better than the 3/32's of tread left on the Michelin LTX's on it now.
I had bfg at ko's and they wouldn't balance out. Now I'm stuck with rugged trail's.=not good in deep snow but wear like iron.Last set lasted 72k miles!!
The Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour is also snow rated and does have the mountain and snowflake on the sidewall. You wouldn't go wrong with them or the BFG KOs. I just prefer the GYs as I have never gotten the mileage out of the BFGs that I have the GYs. Again, just my experiences.
