Sticky accelerator

My 05 ranger 2.4 liter 100K miles has a sticky accelerator, it seems to be worse when it is cold. When I push the pedal from Idle I get resistance to pedal motion then when I push harder it suddenly moves and the truck jumps ahead.
I Have disconnected the accelerator cable from the throttle body and the problem is not in the pedal or the cable.
Is anyone else having this problem and what is the fix?

Ok, for starters, the 2.4L is a Toyota engine. Toyota is having problems with sticking accelerators right now.

However your truck doesn't have that engine, it has a 2.3L Duratech. You can clean the throttle plate with throttle body cleaner. That should resolve the problem. If it still persists, then there may be something actually wrong with the throttle body.

Sticky Throttle

Have you cleaned the throttle body recently? On my 1998 and my 2002 there are stickers on the throttle body that mention that cleaning the throttle butterfly or bore will wipe away a special coating that was put on at the factory. Unfortunately for me I did not notice this sticker until I had the bore and butterfly wiped shiny clean. (whoops) now my throttle has a little bit of resistance in it that wasn't there before, similar to what you describe, it's hard to push, then suddenly breaks loose and the vehicle jumps forward, (but mine's manual so it's not that bad).

But anyway I have yet to figure out what the "special coating" is or how to replace it, but once I do I expect that it will remedy my sticking throttle issue considering that I never had it before I decided to wipe out the throttle body.

i did the same thing. cleaned the heck out of it, then saw the sticker. what i ended up using is motorcycle chain lube. it greasy yet sticky, so it resists flinging all over the place when a chain and sprocket is moving high speed. then on all my throttle linkages and whatnot i blasted them with parts plaster pb. my throttle is nice and smooth.

Mass air flow cleaner will be a safer application, rather than regular carb cleaner. It is formulated to not dissolve the special coating on the throttle plate and body.
